Man breaks into home, raids freezer, puts pile of items in living room - then is found sleeping in closet

By Kyle Feldscher

A 36-year-old Ann Arbor man decided to make himself at home after breaking into a residence on Thanksgiving Day.

Police said he apparently raided the home’s freezer and deposited his property in the living room before falling asleep in a bedroom closet.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said officers responded at 10:08 p.m. Thursday to the 600 block of Catherine Street after the residents returned home. Sometime during the three hours they had been gone, someone had gone through the home’s freezer and deposited a bunch of unknown property in the living room.

“Residents found that the freezer to the refrigerator was open and there was a pile of property in the living room that was not any of theirs,” Bush said.

The man had also apparently ransacked the home’s bedrooms, opening dresser drawers and scattering items on the floor, according to Bush.

Officers who arrived on scene to investigate discovered a window off of the home’s fire escape had been damaged and appeared to be the point of entry. The officers then went inside and spoke with the residents about the incident.

At some point, while taking the report, the officers heard a strange noise coming from a bedroom closet. Officers opened the door and discovered the 36-year-old man sleeping and snoring in the closet, Bush said.

The man was arrested and taken to the Washtenaw County Jail, where he’s awaiting arraignment on home invasion charges, Bush said.

Probably drunk, looking through all the drawers trying to kind something familiar, got fed up and passed out... Thought I was his own home, perhaps?

Annarbor.com has run stories about drugged or drunk men entering homes at night, thinking they were entering their own homes, but they were stopped by the owners from "making themselves at home." If this man wasn't drugged or drunk, he probably thought the residents were visiting relatives in another state for Thanksgiving Day and were taking advantage of four days off work.

Must have made for a few laughs at the police station later in the day. Stuff like this can make up for a lot of not so nice police work! Despite the negative side, this is probably giving the family a few laughs too. All's well that ends well.

Fodder for a future Kinsey-esque article.

Large enough closet to sleep in, eh? My house was built in an era when large closets were illegal. Or maybe owning a lot of clothes was illegal. I get confused. Either way, my point is - and I do have one - is that I live in the Land of Miniscule Closets. I am very envious of the victims' large closet.

That was my thought!! A closet big enough for a guy to sleep in :)

We were talking about the story and came up with a theory. The intruder heard the residents coming home and hid in the closet. He probably had some idea that he'd escape later, but it was dark and warm and after a while he fell asleep.

Wow that was not a smart move...he is not too bright to sleep in a closet is he?

Back in the olden days when you discovered your house was broken into, you left. Then the police came and searched the whole house before they questioned you.

Obviously the homeowner should have locked the doors, per hizzzhoners directive. Wait, what? Oh, nevermind.

Dear Kyle, Would you say this story is the most bizarre story you've ever written on annarbor.com? Love, -metrichead

Sounds like this fellow would make a good candidate for AA City Council. Thinks your home and property is "community property"... Now, if he'd only support an art tax he'd be a shoo-in. Or, maybe, he thought he was at the AA Library.

There's much we don't know about unknown property, of course, but this much is clear: Those unknown properties can reach up and grab you where it's tender, man.

It must have been a relief to have a police officer present before the intruder was discovered.

What the heck does "deposited his property" mean? Is that a euphemism for something icky?

He just got confused after Thanksgiving dinner and too much to drink. He thought he was at Walmart on Black Friday and the tryptophan hit him while in the clothing department.

Tryptophan in turkey doesn't knock you out. Eating x3 as much will. Pure tryptophan will. But I'm going to go out on a limb and say maybe he drank too much.

Actually, he probably was drunk, you are correct. Local 4 News interviewed the residents for the 6 pm newscast. One of the residents said some of the roommates kept their liquor in the freezer...I guess the "closet sleeper" knew where to look for the good stuff!

Just reread my post and I'm thinking I don't have much room to talk. First it was supposed to be "their house invaded" and no like at the end. The last sentence should have started "saying that though".
