Man charged with Ann Arbor bank robbery remains jailed

By Lee Higgins

A man who led police on a chase Wednesday night that ended when he crashed his car in Ypsilanti Township remains jailed on $500,000 bail, Washtenaw County jail officials said this afternoon.

Wesley Charles, 45, is charged with bank robbery, officials said.

He is accused of walking into the TCF Bank branch at Briarwood Mall on June 24, handing a note to a teller demanding money, then leaving with less than $1,000, Ann Arbor police said.

Authorities say when they located him Wednesday, he led them on a chase reaching speeds of 70 miles per hour.

Police say Charles struck a Michigan State Police vehicle with his car, ultimately ditching his Porsche after hitting the concrete foundation of a sign at Holmes and Harris roads.

Charles ran before a Washtenaw County sheriff's deputy Tasered him, police said.

He's due back in court on Aug. 12.

its very common to be offered a chance of bail, its a constitutional right unless you are considered an extreme danger to the public, generally only murderers, rapists, and other violent crimes are not offered bail.
