Man cuts hand during fight behind Ann Arbor bar, police say

By Lee Higgins

An Ann Arbor Township man was hospitalized Saturday morning after cutting his hand when he threw a punch during a fight in an alley behind a South Fifth Avenue bar, Ann Arbor police said.

The 26-year-old man hit a windshield with his fist at about 12:48 a.m. during the fight behind The Fifth Quarter, police spokeswoman Lt. Renee Bush said.

The man was helping his girlfriend put on her shoes when he got into an argument with a man, and a fight ensued, Bush said. His girlfriend had been kicked out of the bar for not wearing shoes and was too intoxicated to give a statement, police said.

In addition to cutting his hand, the man had a bump on his head when he was taken to the University of Michigan Hospital, police said. The other man involved in the fight left in a Pontiac Grand Am, police said.

Anyone with information can call the police department's tip line at (734) 794-6939.

The girlfriend, too drunk to give a statement, was actually shown the door at the bar earlier not because she was drunk, but simply because she wasn't wearing shoes; this bar has standards. But outside donning her shoes, presumably preparatory to re-entering the bar, she needed assistance which her faithful gentleman friend was attempting to lend her when some rude sot stumbled into their respective flight paths and, in the ensuing failure to communicate, the good samaritan punched a car windshield. Maybe the windshield punched back, but anyway the good samaritan got a bump on his head, too. And they say chivalry is dead. All I could think of was Hunter S. Thompson's 300 pound Samoan attorney polishing his shoes in the closet in "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas". I wonder how the good samaritan got to the hospital; did the girlfriend drive?

@lumberg48108 - you are correct, fights happen in AA all the time on campus and off. @forever27 - you are correct also. i wouldn't go to a college nightclub and ask for a martini. it's a college nightclub! college students drink beer, not martinis. i hear Rush is a fine martini bar though. @Edward Vielmetti - how does a fight outside of the bar link it to the city lawsuit? no staff were involved, and at what point are the 5th quarter workers not responsible? what if the kids were pre-drinking on the annarbor.com stairs? would annarbor.com be responsible?

Places like this should lose their license and be shut down.

Forever27, I agree 100%. Fifth Quarter brings out the lower lifeforms that call A2 home. I remember clubbing in my youth and never did I hear of a club with so many issues as Fifth Quarter. It makes Dooley's, Second Chance, and the Nectarine look like a Granny Club. Love the irony that its located only 2 blocks away from our new "improved" city hall.

Do you suppose the victim himself learned a lesson?

The Fifth Quarter isn't a bar, it's a frat house. They don't even stock olives for crying out loud. When I asked the waitress for a martini, she didn't know what it was and had to ask what went in it. I will never step foot in that dump again. All they know how to do there is serve cheap beer to poser frat boys with hopes of shacking up with a sorostitute.

Once again we are forced to ask - is this news? A fight at a college bar that resulted in minor injuries (the biggest likely being a hangover)qualifies as news?
