Man held on $350,000 bond in alleged sexual assault and kidnapping of ex-girlfriend

By Lee Higgins

A man who authorities say sexually assaulted his ex-girlfriend at her Pittsfield Township home on April 9 and then kidnapped her briefly at gunpoint 11 days later is being held at the Washtenaw County Jail on a $350,000 cash or surety bond.

Kwame Lateef Hampton, 29, of Westland, was arraigned this afternoon on charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, third-degree criminal sexual conduct, first-degree home invasion, unlawful imprisonment, assault with a dangerous weapon, domestic violence and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

Pittsfield Township police Lt. Sean McCormick said in court that Hampton broke into the victim's Hawks Avenue home at about 3:30 a.m. April 9 after she wouldn't come over to his house. Hampton entered through an unlocked family room window, walked into the victim's bedroom, McCormick said, and sexually assaulted her after she declined to have sex with him.

Nine days later, police say the victim walked outside her home and saw Hampton get out of a car. She ran, but he grabbed her and threatened to shoot her if she didn't get in his car, police said. After Hampton drove a short distance and came to a stop sign, the victim attempted to get out, when Hampton started beating her, McCormick said. The victim was ultimately able to get out of the car and received help from a driver in the area, McCormick said.

Investigators recovered a loaded handgun behind Hampton's father's house in Inkster, McCormick said.

McCormick said the victim's family is "very scared of what Mr. Hampton is going to do when he gets out."

Washtenaw County Assistant Prosecutor Arianne Slay asked Magistrate Thomas Truesdell to deny bond in the sexual assault case. Slay said Hampton has not only spoke of killing the victim, but also himself. He has access to weapons, including a semi-automatic handgun, she said.

Attorney Jerome Barney, who is representing Hampton, said Hampton is a student, is employed and has no criminal record. "Your honor, my client is not suicidal," Barney said.

Regarding the alleged sexual assault that Hampton is accused of committing, Barney said, "there's some indication when this occurred, he was drunk."

Truesdell set the bond and ordered Hampton have no contact with the victim. If convicted, Hampton could be sentenced to up to life in prison.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 4.

The Free Press reported that the perp was the son of the mayor of Inkster. That's a pretty significant omission on your part!

Regarding the alleged sexual assault that Hampton is accused of committing, Barney said, "there's some indication when this occurred, he was drunk." And that has what to do with anything sir? Clearly you are not a very good lawyer if you offer this kind of nonsense. Oh and btw you just admitted your client performed a DUI in order to go commit the alleged assualt. Thanks!

You mention that the gun was found behind his father's house in Inkster. You did not mention that his father is the mayor of Inkster.

Didn't mention his mother's occupation either.

What a relief for the victim and her family now. (I can understand the family being scared if he should get out). I wonder if a PPO would have helped. (probably not) Wishing the victim well now, and hope this man pays his debt.
