Man hospitalized after attack that followed late-night snack order

By Kyle Feldscher

Getting a late-night snack after a night out turned into a painful experience for one Ann Arbor man, who had to be hospitalized after being assaulted by two men early Monday morning.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said the man was at a bar before going to the 1200 block of South University Avenue to get something to eat. Bush said the man went into a restaurant to order and walked back out the front door.

As he left, the man was grabbed from behind and thrown to the ground. The man told police he was kicked six times in the ribs by two men and twice in the jaw when he attempted to stand up.

Police responded to the University of Michigan Hospital after the assault was reported just after 3 a.m. Monday. The man had soreness in his ribs and jaw, Bush said.

Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to call the Ann Arbor police anonymous tip line at 734-794-6939/

Former mich resident blaming minorities always seems to be the easy answer. I guess minorities decided to put less cops on the streets also right. Minorities have no power to make decisions in Ann Abor but get the blame when this broken system is exposed

Any reason the name of the restaurant isn't mentioned?

RE: "one Ann Arbor man, who had to be hospitalized after being assaulted by two men..." He's just one of a growing number of assault victims here. It would be interesting to see what the total of all these assault victim's medical & hospital bills are adding up to. Or maybe some valid / competent news writer will favor us with some follow up interviews with victims to see how their recovery is going. Maybe some local journalist has seen the kind of stories Mitch Albom has built a successful career on. Maybe. Maybe someone will figure out that their cell phone can be used in emergency situations to summon police - and not just for recording the assault taking place right before their eyes. Oh but wait, everyone knows the sole purpose of having a cell phone is for having chats with friends in a state of oblivion and to "entertain" everyone within earshot with their wit and wisdom.

Again, commenters are suggesting student involvement. I'd suggest gang initiation activity. Ann Arborites need to get real... you've got a gang problem which has no connection with students except they end up the victims. There is a large group of uneducated, unemployable young men (minorities typically) who live in Ypsi and A2 with little or nothing to do. Couple that with a revolving door justice system that has been in place a decade or more in A2 and Washtenaw County ... and you've got Ann Arbor 2012. Get used to it!

It may not be students but it sure is odd that it goes up as soon as they arrive back at school. It doesn't mean students can't be in gangs either.

I think that @FormerMichRes gets voted down by angry liberals who do not care for him stating the truth, "... a gang problem... a large group of uneducated, unemployable young men (minorities typically)..." Live elsewhere where this is so much more common. Why most American cities are no good. Why Detroit is losing people. Not Silly.

I don't know if we could ever have enough cops to handle some of these idiots.

Sure, especially a few undercover ones. Take them off of traffic duty on Sunday Mornings. Bust thugs instead of church goers doing 40 on State Street. I saw a bicycle patrol last Sunday evening at William and Thompson. A most welcome and wonderful sight! Perhaps more are needed on South U. Once the word gets out, crime will drop.

I have suffered some serious attacks following late-night snack orders, but usually a couple of Tums or a Zantac and I'm good.

Always funny to make light of someone else's assault that lands them in the hospital ?

I went to the coney island after the Tigers' game last night in Detroit, and felt totally safe walking back to the car. Wish I could say the same about walking in Ann Arbor after midnight.

"Feeling safe" does not necessarily have any bearing on reality.

What has happened to Ann Arbor? I remember it as being quite safe, for the most part.
