Man released from prison 19 days earlier found in stolen vehicle, police say

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Three people inside a vehicle stolen out of Ypsilanti were arrested Saturday — including a 51-year-old passenger who had been released from prison just 19 days earlier, according to the Michigan State Police Ypsilanti post.

A trooper patrolling Saturday night spotted the stolen vehicle on Michigan Avenue in Ypsilanti and followed it as the driver pulled into the Riley Court apartments off Michigan Avenue in Ypsilanti Township, police said.

The vehicle had been stolen from the city of Ypsilanti a day earlier, according to a news release.

State troopers and Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies stopped the vehicle and arrested the three occupants, police said. The 51-year-old recent parolee, who was a passenger in the car, claimed he owned it, the release said.

The man was lodged in the Washtenaw County Jail on several outstanding warrants and a parole detainer, the release said. No information was available on his conviction that led to the prison sentence.

Police said the case will be forwarded to prosecutors to review for criminal charges.

No caution displayed. He may have no resources and misses having a warm bed and three meals a day, compliments of the penal system. These are hard economic times and it is cold outside.

The passenger in the car (a recent parolee) claimed he owned the car? Just getting a ride, and didn't know it was stolen? I certainly don't feel spiteful in saying this. I think he has much more debt to pay.

Stolen *from* the city of Ypsilanti of *in* the city?

Substitute "or" for "of." The point being, was it a city owned car?

Has anybody considered the possibilty that this person didn't know that the car was stolen. If this guy was simply getting a ride from someone, after serving his debt to society, I find it very disturbing that there are people ready to send him straight back to prison. And if he was simply getting a ride and didn't know the car was stolen, shame on all of you for being so spiteful.

Looks like I put my foot in my mouth this time Jeff. I originally thought it read that the driver claimed ownership. Shame on ME this time, for not reading the article thoroughly before commenting.

The article clearly says, "The 51-year-old recent parolee, who was a passenger in the car, claimed he owned it ... "

How about some follow up on this. The guy was out on parole and he had outstanding warrants? Did they date from before his prison time? If so, how did he get released? Or were they since he's been out? I thought it took more than 19 days to get a warrant issued.

I'm glad the new sentencing trends, that deal with career criminals.

"The 51-year-old recent parolee, who was a passenger in the car, claimed he owned it" Another MPRI graduate? "The man was lodged in the Washtenaw County Jail on several outstanding warrants" and he has only been out 19 days?
