Police said they had probable cause to arrest man for murder in disappearance of Pittsfield Township woman

By Lee Higgins

A man remains jailed in Indiana this morning after Merrillville, Ind., police said they had probable cause to arrest him Tuesday for murder in connection with the disappearance of 44-year-old Dawn Marie Fital of Pittsfield Township.

Greg Noack, 44, of Pittsfield Township, who is believed to be Fital's boyfriend, is being held at Lake County Jail, where two Pittsfield Township police detectives have been interviewing him, Merrillville Police Chief Joe Petruch said this morning.

Petruch said the crime is believed to have occurred in Michigan but did not elaborate. So far, no charges have been filed, he said.

Noack was booked at the jail at 1:45 a.m. Wednesday and must be charged within 48 hours, jail officials said this morning, or he will have to be released. He has not been permitted to have visitors, officials said. It's unclear whether he has an attorney.

Petruch declined to release details of Noack's arrest in Merrillville that prompted police there to contact Michigan authorities. Noack was reportedly acting suspiciously behind a bank when he was taken into custody.

Pittsfield Township police spent much of Wednesday searching an apartment in the Arbor Knoll complex on Michigan Avenue, where Fital lived with her boyfriend and ex-husband Patrick Fital. She married Patrick Fital in Toledo in 1988 and the two were divorced in 1999, Washtenaw County court records show.

Pittsfield Township Deputy Police Chief Gordy Schick declined to comment this morning.

Fital, a mother of four, is a championship pool player who travels across the country to compete. Her cousin, Francine Bowles, 27, of Kimberly, Wis., said this morning that she has not received any updates from police, but plans to Michigan to be with family members.

“I really just want to see her come home safe or know that she’s OK,” she said. “Or just have closure with it. It would be nice to know if she’s OK, or just with God."

"Pittsfield Township Deputy Police Chief Gordy Schick declined comment this morning." Glad to see that Gordy is not "jumping the gun" again. We all learn from our prior mistakes, Gordy.
