Man robbed at gunpoint at ATM in Pittsfield Township

By Lee Higgins

A man was robbed at gunpoint Saturday night while he was sitting in his car at an ATM on East Michigan Avenue, Pittsfield Township police said.

About 7:55 p.m., the 22-year-old York Township man was at the Chase Bank ATM at 6957 East Michigan Avenue when a masked man approached his car and pulled out a black semi-automatic handgun, police said.

According to police, the man demanded money from the victim. The victim handed over his money and the man left, possibly getting into a vehicle in the area. A detailed description of the man was not available.

Anyone with information can call police at (734) 822-4911.

This ATM is directly accross Michigan Ave from the Saline/Pittsfield Walmart. The Walmart has an artifical mound in front of it stretching the length of Walmart's property about 8 to 10 feet tall. In the middle of this mound is an opening with a sidewalk which was built for the intention of anyone walking to Walmart to be able to enter through this opening. Right behind this opening is the parking lot. I suspect the perp headed through this opening to a waiting car, and took off from there. The area is "very" dark after sundown and this would make for a perfect get away for anyone. I sure hope the pittsfield police are working with Walmart Security to view the parking lot surveillance tapes at this time. Walmart has cameras all over that parking lot pointing in every direction but up. Perhaps a car tag number may be visible if this is what the robber did. I do not see any other logical way he or she could have left the area quickly without being spotted unless this route was used. There is no where to run in the area in the darkness that comes about at sundown unless the robber took a path into the surrounding fields and woods. A car parked anywhere else would look out of place and attract attention. I also suspect that one day Walmart will be robbed in this manner with the perp running in the opposite direction and a vehicle waiting in the auto parts parking lot. That mound in front of Walmart hides the whole parking lot, and to me is a very bad idea. To have a very small opening right in the middle of it is inviting unforseen problems. It's a great way to disapper very fast in to the darkness from either direction.

I have used that ATM and the first thing that went through my mind when I pulled up there was the fact that it seemed like a place where someone could get robbed easily. Unfortunately, not surprised. Chase Bank please move that ATM! Both my kids use it!

It's a rural area, not a usual place for a robbery??? Hopefullyt there's a picture of the robber. Warhawk, you might want to educate yourself, I got my alert from Pittsfield's finest....take another look, annarbor.com got their information from who?

Hopefully the bank has a camera on the area of the ATM. But, with the suspect wearing the mask, who knows if he will ever be identified. I always worried about someone approaching the drivers side, and make it impossoble to get between me and the ATM, but my God there are so many other windows to approach. Congrats to the York Twp. man for giving up his money, and not his life.

This looks like the most important story this morning. If Google maps is right, this is right across the street from a Walmart, Saturday night, right around dark. That's a pretty bold, and dangerous, stick-up man. And we know nothing about the guy except that it was a man with a gun. I unfortunately expect we'll read more about this hoodlum in the near future.

Pretty brazen, the Bigby's and auto store right next to this ATM would still have been open. I use the Bank of America ATM right next door so that's a bit worrisome. And no alert from the Pittsfield PD, what gives?

My bad. But I've never heard about the service you mentioned. Guess that's an email I missed.

Ummm, yeah, it's called Nixle text and email alerts, which the Pittsfield PD is a user of. Considering they are able to send out nearly live traffic updates for accidents they respond to through this service I don't think its a lot to ask for a less than 12 hour response time time on armed robberies, home invasions, etc.

Warhawk, it's in the news Sunday morning, for annarbor.com that really fast. And what do you expect the Pittsfield PD to do call you personally just because you use the ATM next door?
