Man shot in downtown Ann Arbor during drug deal

By Lee Higgins

Two Ann Arbor men were arrested Wednesday night, suspected of shooting a man in the leg during a drug deal in the 400 block of Thompson Street, Ann Arbor police said.

The 42-year-old victim, who lives in Ypsilanti, was taken by ambulance to University of Michigan Hospital, but police did not have an update on his condition this morning.

Police spokeswoman Lt. Renee Bush said the victim met with the men about 10:50 p.m., planning to sell them marijuana. That's when they attempted to rob him and shot him, Bush said.

Bush said she did not know how many shots were fired. Detectives are investigating whether anyone else was involved, she said.

Anyone with information can call the police department's confidential tip line at (734) 794-6939.

There always seems to be enough police manning the speed traps such as State Street on Sunday Mornings by the car dealers or on Huron Parkway just north of Barnes and Noble Bookstore. They are determined to stop people going 40 in a artificially low limit area of 35 - That does seem to be a priority for this mayor, as is the big dig, the new city hall building, and painted bike symbols. But keeping the streets safer? No...

If you know where they are, slow down and go the speed limit, artificial or not.

We get it. You got a ticket. Get over it. Not sure what that has to do with a shooting.

It was rather brazen to rob and shoot someone only a few blocks from police headquarters. But with all the layoffs of police, maybe the criminals thought they would have a less chance of getting caught. Thanks to the AAPD who made arrests in a swift fashion.

@tdw: I did not pick up that CI was snidely slamming ypsi. I was making fun of the State of KY Realizing that he was slamming Ypsi, I was commenting about the odd way that a prospective member of the State Senate (he ran for the seat from A2 in the fall) thinks about a community in the State of Michigan. I understand that Ypsi is mostly Democratic, and I suspect that fact as well as other characteristics of the community lead a failed RepubliKan candidate to take obtuse shots at it. Good Night and Good Luck

Ok I'll try again in a more mature manner. Ed I don't get it please explain what you are talking about.Anyone from this area knows that Ypsilanti's nick name is Ypsikucky. What doe's this have to do with politics ? You may not know this but Ypsi is mostly Democrats.( apparently it's only a violation if you play with the spelling of Democrat )

You're right--if that's a shot at Ypsi, it's one that only a failed RepubliKan candidate for the legislature understands. And tells us much about the manner in which he would perform his duties in the unlikely event he were ever elected. Good Night and Good Luck

Haha... why on Earth would this dude rob and shoot someone for marijuana? Do you know how easy it is to get a medical marijuana card in this city? And *relatively* cheap!

AfterDark

Thu, Jun 30, 2011 : 9:30 p.m.

Who said it was just for the marijuana? People selling often have a lot of cash on hand.

Before this dispensary business even came about, wasn't it just a small monetary fee if you were caught with marijuana? Anywho, sorry to get off topic--I just can't believe someone could possibly want pot badly enough to shoot another person!

Lindsay, I can attest that it is quite easy to obtain said marijuana card in THIS city, as I know multiple people with one... ; )

In the future, dispensaries will become the primary targets for gang bangers intent on scoring drugs. I must appeal to the Mayor's sense of duty to maintain an adequate Police force.

Wolf's Bane

Thu, Jun 30, 2011 : 11:16 p.m.

5c0++ H4d13y, gang bangers are involved in all areas of criminal activity. Dispensaries are easy picking and a great source for free product which they can then distribute at a significant mark-up. You need to take a view business classes or perhaps, talk to gang bangers. Don't be so obtuse.

Ricebrnr

Thu, Jun 30, 2011 : 9:57 p.m.

If he had any sense at all he would not have been gutting saftey services for so long in the first place

5c0++ H4d13y

Thu, Jun 30, 2011 : 9:38 p.m.

"Gang bangers" don't "score" drugs they sell drugs. Most often their violence is fighting over turf for distribution. Prohibition leads to increased value of products on a black market. Products that are valuable and in demand are worth fighting for. Products that are widely available and cheap are not fought over. So if "dispensaries" provide what people want and a lower cost it wont be worth it to go in guns blazing. Problem solved.

How exactly would more police stop this crime from happening? They actually arrested the people responsible.
