Murder trial delayed for half-brothers accused in Ypsilanti Township shooting
The trial for two half-brothers accused in the shooting death of a 20-year-old man along Golfside Road in Ypsilanti Township last summer was postponed to March.
Michael Crockett, 20, and Charles Pippins, 16, were scheduled to stand trial on murder and robbery charges Jan. 31 in Washtenaw County Circuit Court. But attorneys for both teens requested a postponement, records show.
Testimony at a September preliminary hearing indicated Crockett and Pippins were wrestling with Chris King in the Kmart parking lot in Ypsilanti Township on July 25. The confrontation escalated, and King was shot. He staggered across Golfside Road and collapsed in an apartment complex, where Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies found him and rendered aid. He died in the emergency room from a gunshot wound that pierced his heart, authorities testified.
Tina Crockett, the mother of Crockett and Pippins, admitted to driving them around the county to avoid police throughout the day. She is scheduled to be sentenced Jan. 26, but that could be delayed since she is expected to testify at their trial.
David Reynolds, also charged with being an accessory after the fact, delayed his scheduled pre-trial hearing last week to Feb. 2, records show. He is also slated to face a jury trial with Crockett and Pippins on March 21.

Just got my 5th summons to jury duty in 16 years (at least 5x the national average). So I'm a "little"cynical about the churning of the drivers licenses which occurs as a result of dismissing all the citizens who're coerced into sitting around all day waiting to be impanelled for SOME trial that isn't cancelled or delayed for "whatever" reason by "whoever" has a golf date that day. Oh wait, it's too cold for golf: make that, "whoever" has skiing trip to go on. And yeah, freelance or not - reporters need to do more than "report" what they read on bulletin boards and what they hear as court officials leave the courtroom. Ask!.... please, for details. Thousands of us adults who have a drivers license are waiting to hear when their lives will next be disrupted for "court business" (hah!).

So why exactly did the attorney request a delay? I missed this point in the story.

annarbor.com headline: "Murder trial delayed for helf-brothers accused in Ypsilanti Township Shooting." What's a "helf-brother"? Is he related to a "helf-proofreader"?

Typo in the headline of this story. Half, not Helf.
