North Carolina woman charged with fatally shooting Ypsilanti woman outside Livonia business

By AnnArbor.com Staff

A North Carolina woman was arraigned Sunday on charges that she gunned down an Ypsilanti woman outside her Livonia workplace last week, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office.

Julie Ann Hopwood is accused of driving more than 600 miles from Charlotte, North Carolina, and waiting 45 minutes outside the Livonia business complex before shooting Amy Chesbro, according to WXYZ.

The shooting occurred at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at a business on Victor Parkway in Livonia. Chesbro, 35, of Ypsilanti, died at a Livonia hospital Friday night.

Both women knew each other, according to the Detroit Free Press. WXYZ reported that Hopwood is related to Chesbro's roommate, but a motive for the shooting hasn't been released.

I find it disgusting that the murderer is being backed by her church! She killed Amy in cold blood, even if she has entered an insanity the church should not be involved any further than counseling the killer.

John of Saline, Yes, I'm very sad to say, this is the same Amy Chesbro who graduated from the UM School of Information ('01). The faculty and staff who knew her are stunned by the news.

I have 0 tolerance for violence, after having been there in the late 50's. A PPO and Divorce set me free. There really is no reason or excuse to be violent, need a healthy mind of course.

"There is no excuse for violance PERIOD." Sorry no, meeting violence with violence in defense of self or loved ones is both just and "excusable". Not doing your utmost in the fight for your life or those you love when you have done nothing to instigate it is inexcusable, period.

@ Lovaduck & You Whine: I agree with both of you. Thinking about it - if I were protecting my kids -I could probably be pretty agressive - but I think that would be more of an instinctive reaction to protect. As angry as I have gotten - I just don't think I could be agressive out of anger if there was no imminent danger to my life or my kids.

@Lovaduck... The reason the bumper sticker is so worded is because it is made by organization's like SafeHouse. If you talk to them they will often find reasons and excuses for violence against men. While they find violence against women abhorrant, they will most often justify a woman attacking a man by saying that he must have done something in the past to make her do it. I agree with you. There is no excuse for violance PERIOD.

Woman CAN be as violent as men in many circumstances. This is not in any way to sound sexist. The stereotype that only macho men are violent is just that--a stereotype. The old bumper sticker, "There is no excuse for violence against women" always struck me as odd. I would replace it with "There is no excuse for domestic violence" if I wanted a bumper sticker. True, more of that type of violence is committed by men, but there is the reverse also, about which men often keep silent. I wish it were true that one gender has no inclination to violent behavior, but I'm sad to say that's just not so.

Was this the Amy Chesbro that attended the U. of Michigan School of Information, graduating in 2001?

Are people becoming more drastic in their actions or are we just more informed about these things happening? I just can't imagine being so angry at anyone that my response would be to want to kill them - or worse yet - carry out a plan to kill them. 600 miles is a lot of 'cooling off time' - I can't fathom being that angry. I know it sounds sexist - but it seems that more women are becoming violent. So much for the thinking that women are the more gentle and nurturing gender.

Hey Steve, What's wrong with speculating about the motive of the crime? I know the motive, so it's not really speculation. But even if it was, what's wrong with people speculating about what the motive is? We're just people talking. Just curious...thanks
