Smokeblwr: Keep your job, have a firearm for when you are home, but get an alarm system and work with your neighbors to develop a neighborhood watch program. You do have practical steps you can take, so quit gloom-and-dooming and get busy. RJA: You seem to think you're in a good situation re police response, yet you had time to call 911, work your alarm system, see the criminals run away, and talk to your alarm company--all before the police arrived. That doesn't sound all that fast to me. Sounds more like they would have arrived in time to pick up the pieces if things had gone violent, but that's about it. Good thing you weqre home and have the alarm. How about a neighborhood watch in your area?

I live sort of in the sticks. There is no slow police response here. I wonder if these homes have a security system? The last time 2 men in a van drove in my drive, both got out and tried my door knob, I called 911, then went over and set my alarm system. I opened a door, the siren went off, they couldn't get back in the van fast enough. I saw them, but they never saw me. My phone started ringing, talked with the alarm staff and canceled the police. Ring my door bell or knock, don't try the door handle. I can see who is at my door, if I don't like the way they look, don't know them, I don't answer. Setting my alarm quickly works!

This is becoming more and more common in rural and semi-rural areas. The M.O. is to pull up to a house in a pickup truck or van pretending to be a contractor, ring the doorbell and if somebody answers pretend that you must have been sent to the wrong address to do work and leave, if nobody answers then break into the house in the back and take as much as you can. The reason they do this "out in the sticks" is the distance between the houses and the slower police response time. The only way to stop it? Quit your job, buy a gun and wait by the back door.
