One person has been transported to the University of Michigan Hospital in critical condition from what police believe is an accidental gunshot wound early Thursday afternoon.

Huron Valley Ambulance spokeswoman Joyce Williams said emergency crews were sent at 12:30 p.m. Thursday to the 700 block of North Maple Road for a report of one person injured by a single gunshot wound. Williams said the person was taken to U-M hospital to be treated.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Jim Baird said Thursday afternoon that the investigation into the incident is on going, but police believed the shooting was an accident. Detectives remained at the home in the North Maple Estates into the afternoon Thursday.

Update at 2:20 p.m.: Baird said the injuries suffered by the person in the shooting were not life threatening. Details on the shooting were still not available, but Baird more information may be available soon.

Sgt. Earle Fox was on scene at the Maple Road home in the North Maple Estates area. He said detectives were actively investigating but could not release more information.

Two Ann Arbor police officers were injured while driving west on Ellsworth Road near State Street while they were going to the shooting, according to police. The officers and the driver of the other car, which was turning into Zippy's Auto Wash and did not pull over despite the officers' car showing lights and sirens, were taken to area hospitals.

Update at 3:13 p.m.: Baird said a young adult man was injured by the gunshot earlier Thursday afternoon. Although police were still on scene investigating, Baird said detectives believe the shooting was unintentional.

“They do believe it’s an accident,” he said.

Information on the exact circumstances leading up to the man’s injuries was not available. The man's exact age was not available.

There is no such thing as an accidental shooting, unintentional yes...but negligence on someone's part causes the weapon to fire.

Are the shooter and victim one and the same, or two different people? It's unclear from the story.

Good lord this is what the Police have to work with? For back up to come from the other side of town? Why did we need this new artwork? I would have rather seen another officer on the road.

Great Job AA Police! Back-ups are usually called to stage, and make sure the officer is safe to enter an area where a shooting has taken place. Hopefully the 2 AA Officers did not suffer serious injuries. @ BCAR You must be kidding, officers don't really want to get into the action when they hear of shootings. I'm sure they prefer to hear none. Happy to hear they are still investigating this accidential shooting.

We start the year with claims that last year was the safest on record for Ann Arbor. Then 2012 happened. I hope the officers and auto wash patron get to sleep in their own beds tonight and have a swift recovery.

SMC- That's right - we can thank the police for keeping us unruly citizens in order. It probably has nothing to do with the type of person who lives in Ann Arbor, and everything to do with the effective police protection.

Ann Arbor is one of the safest cities in the US because of the AAPD, Chris. It didn't happen entirely by accident.

Zzzzzzzzzzzzt. Ann Arbor is one of the safest cities in the U.S. These guys are more likely to die in a traffic accident on the way to the aftermath of a crime...

Is the police coverage in AA that bad? We have police responding to the shooting and injured in the accident at State and Elsworth, with the shooting was on the opposite side of town. Please tell m AA has more available cops than this. I have no idea why police on one side of town would be responding to the completely opposite side of town, unless they were directed to because of a ongoing situation needing all available officers to the scene.

Matt Cooper

Fri, May 18, 2012 : 3:46 a.m.

Let's see...Ellsworth to Lohr to Oak Valley to Scio Church to South Maple to Stadoim to North Maple...with lights and sirens on and little to no traffic...you're there in about 6 minutes. Or better yet, Ellsworth to Wagner to Dexter to North Maple...lights and sirens on, little to no traffic...you're there evan sooner. Also..."I have no idea why police on one side of town would be responding to the completely opposite side of town"...if you don't know, why comment? Every available officer responding to a shooting call is standard practice.

chapmaja- I responded to another comment with this, but I feel it bears repeating. It's department policy to send every available unit to a major incident that's been reported. It's happened when a little girl was hit by a car, a motorcycle crash in the area, etc.

really?? The cops at Ellsworth and State were needed on the other side of town? I find it hard to belv. that there were not other units in the area or were there already. but as soon as they hear "shots fired" they all want in on the action...

the comedy of Ann Arbor, safest town in universe ...who thought we would have shooting one a year?

Arbuckle

Thu, May 17, 2012 : 8:55 p.m.

Bcar, it doesn't exactly work that way. The police units on patrol don't just get to pick and choose where they go, they are dispatched. It's not like the police are saying "ooh that sounds interesting, lets go!" There are policies and guidelines in place so that a proper response can be made according to the type of emergency.
