Community members will have a chance to take a stand against crime tonight during the Pittsfield Township Department of Public Safety's National Night Out event at Montibeller Park.
The free event, which aims to raise awareness about crime and how to prevent it, is from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the park at 4305 Ellsworth Road, a DPS news release said.
Similar events are being held across the country tonight.
Children will get a chance to see police cars, fire trucks, a helicopter from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital and members of the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department's Mounted Patrol and K-9 units, said Pittsfield Township police Lt. Sean McCormick. Bicycles, iPods, concert tickets and other items will be raffled off, he said.
People can sign up at the event for Nixle, which allows them to receive updates electronically from the township police and fire departments about news in their community, McCormick said. In addition, information packets about creating neighborhood watch groups will be available, the release said.
Numerous area nonprofits will be participating, McCormick said.
