Cab driver robbed by supposed customer in Pittsfield Township
A 56-year-old Ann Arbor cab driver reported being robbed in a Pittsfield Township condominium complex by a man who called for a ride, according to police.
Pittsfield Township Public Safety Department officials reported the unarmed robbery occurred at 10:35 a.m. Monday in the 5700 block of Wellesley Lane, in the Wellesley Gardens Condominiums. The driver was dispatched to the complex to pick up a man who called the cab company claiming to need a ride.
The driver reported the man took cash from his shirt pocket and then fled the area on foot, according to police. No weapons were seen or implied during the incident.
Investigators canvassed the area looking for the suspect but were unable to locate him Monday.
The man is described as black, 18 to 25 years old, between 5-feet-8 and 5-feet-10 inches tall, medium build, clean shaven with a crooked smile, according to police. He was last seen wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt and "unknown pants."
Anyone with information on the robbery is encouraged to call the Pittsfield Township police at 734-822-4921.

It does happen that fast, and it is startling to the driver. I drove a cab for quite a few years in this area and was ripped off several times. Mostly by runners, who would get to their location and jump out and run away. The drivers change cash should never be seen, and kept in a different place in the cab. A box or wallet is good, but I kept the large bills a in different pockets, and several different folds of multisized bills. that way you can hand them a fold ten, five , and several one's They want to get out of the car quickly so they just grab the fold, and i may have been out 20 bucks, but not the ever all of it.

Ypsi doesn't actually 'start' until Golfside going East so this is Pittsfield.

Clara, I've pretty well memorized the arrangement of Washtenaw County's 20 townships, but not where the expressways and major roads go through them. When you wrote that some Evergreen Apartments have 48197 zip codes and other Evergreen Apartments have 48108, I realized that 48108 goes further east than I ever imagined. I thought jmac and Mumbambu, Esq. must be residents and voters in Ypsi to tell us what they did. I looked at ewashtenaw.org enough to see that city voters can go there to find out what ward they live in. Further investigation of the site can most likely tell any one of us how any township's precincts are laid out.

Now, if you want to talk zip codes, that is a completely different animal. The US post office usually will not recognize townships so parts of Pittsfield Twp end up with Ypsilanti zip codes and parts with Ann Arbor zip codes. This can make things real confusing. Evergreen Apartments off of Packard is a great example. The complex is in Pittsfield Twp but, depending on what part you could have an address of Ypsilanti 48197 or Ann Arbor 48108!

Ann, the Washtenaw County Jail is in Pittsfield Township. The Washtenaw Circuit Court is in the City of Ann Arbor, but also holds Court in Pittsfield Twp. There are District Courts all over Washtenaw County, including Ypsilanti Township, Pittsfield Twp., City of Ypsilanti and City of Ann Arbor. If you want to see the actual boarders of places like the City of Ypsilanti, Ypsilanti Twp., Pittsfield Twp and the City of Ann Arbor there are great maps on the county web site at ewashtenaw.org

Ann Arbor is the county seat of Washtenaw County, so the jail and courts are in it, not in Ypsilanti. The county jail and at least one courtroom are east of Carpenter/Hogback Road, so Ypsilanti's western border has to be east of Carpenter/Hogback Road. jmac and Mumbambu, Esq. must not have joined in with us other comment posters a few weeks ago, when we all agreed that Carpenter marked the boundary between Ypsilanti and Pittsfield Townships. But today I agree with them, what with pure reasoning I cite above about the county seat.

To clarify, Ypsilanti Township starts at Golfside. :)

So sorry for the cab driver....they have a risky job and they are really nice folks! Horrible. Funny a while back a company located in Van Buren Township with good job news was identified here as an "ANN ARBOR AREA business". Go figure.

What I figure is that whoever wrote the story hasn't visited Van Buren Metropark or other places in Van Buren Township that their friends or associates frequent more often than they do. A journalist doesn't have to memorize a county's townships to know when one is outside the county, but it helps to know the names of roads that separate one county from another, like Napier Road does. I wasn't at all surprised that Van Buren Metropark was in Wayne County because an associate who lived in Belleville was the one who recommended that our group go there for an event. Belleville is definitely in Wayne County.

We should start a poll to see what Ann Arbor residents call this area. Being slightly east of Platt Road, I would guess that most would consider it to be Ypsi.

AA.com rules: 1) If something good happens outside of Ann Arbor, identify it as having happened "in the Ann Arbor area." 2) If something bad happens outside of Ann Arbor, identify the actual jurisdiction where it occured. 3) If something bad happens in Ann Arbor, ignore it for as long as possible (or until other blogs post about it).

Based on recent precedent (see http://annarbor.com/news/ann-arbor-company-helps-in-the-fight-against-k2-like-drugs/ ), shouldn't the headline read "Cab driver robbed by supposed customer in Ann Arbor-area condominium complex?"
