Police detain two teens with burglary tools walking in Pittsfield Township

By Cindy Heflin

Pittsfield Township police Thursday morning arrested two teenagers carrying what police said were burglary tools along a street near Washtenaw Avenue.

A Pittsfield officer saw the two walking along the side of the street in the 2500 block of Hawks Avenue about 10:20 a.m.

Because there have been several home invasions in the area during daylight hours recently, the officer stopped them and began talking to them. The teens told the officer they were on probation for home invasion.

The officer searched a backpack they were carrying and found burglary tools, police said. The two were taken into custody and held in the Washtenaw County Jail while police investigate whether they are linked to recent home invasions. A report will be forwarded to the prosecutor’s office.

Both teens are from Ypsilanti. One is 18 and one is 19.

Could the police have been involved in "profiling"? Oh, the evilness of it all!

The police did the right thing arresting these teenagers. I especially appreciate this, because I live in that subdivision and would hate our home to be burglarized.

Just so everyone knows, "burglary tools" is very broad and can include a number of common items. Also, I wish I had heard about the previous conviction of these two when it happened - my mother was cleaning a house on Hawks a couple years ago and her car was broken into and jewelry was stolen.

I'm concerned that the police are accosting pedestrians. I certainly would not expect to be stopped just for walking along a busy road. On what grounds did the police search the backpack? If they have this right because the men are on probation, I'd say the system works perfectly.

@BS3, The township police regularly stop teenagers who are on foot to have a chat with them. It's a little weird. Kids in this area frequently cut through Hawks Ave. to go to Target or Meijer. My bigger concern is what they consider reasonable cause for a search. If they can search any kid's backpack because there have been break-ins in the area, that's a little weak.

And you would have done what?

We need to punish criminals to the point that they will never want to commit another crime and end up back in prison. Why do so many people feel more sorrow today for the criminal than they do for the victims? Put them into an environment that they will fear to return and we may just stop some of this nonsense.

In light of recent events in Farmington Hills I say we get RID of parole in this state. I'm all for more prisons if it keeps guys like this away from us.

I am certain that they had just found the tools on the sidewalk and were trying to find the rightful owners before the officers stopped them. More than likely this excuse will set them free.

Nice PROACTIVE Police work, Pittsfield! If Ann Arbor would do things just like this, the home invasion problem would get better real quick.

These guys are adults. Using "teen' in your headline implies that they are juveniles instead of adults.

These MEN were walking around, on probation for home invasion, carrying a bag with the tools of their trade in them? No more promises for these two, and did they just violate the rules of their probation?
