Police still looking for suspect in assault of U-M cafeteria manager

By Heidi Fenton

Police have not made any arrests after the Friday assault of a University of Michigan hospital employee, but are continuing to “follow several strong leads,” Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Diane Brown said Monday.

According to police, a man pulled out a stun gun, assaulted a cafeteria manager, and then ran out the south entrance of the C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital around 6:40 p.m. Police described the incident as an attempted armed robbery, but Brown said it was not clear whether the stun gun was used during the assault.

The victim, a man, was treated at the hospital and released, she said.

The suspect is described as a black male in his late 20s, about 5-foot-8 with hair in cornrows or dreadlocks. He was wearing a white T-shirt, black pants and a ski mask.

Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact the U-M Department of Public Safety at (734) 763-1131 or dial 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency.

you would think that someone walking around in this weather wearing a ski mask while brandishing a stun gun would be a red flag to hospital staff.

With that ski mask on my first suspicion is that the suspect plays football for Michigan State.

Unless I'm missing something, with all the security cameras in the hospital they don't have a photo of the suspect?

Absolutely correct Roadman. A huge benefit of the trespass statute for institutions like the UM is that all offenders who have no authority to be on the property should receive the warning regardless of the offense committed. Suppose a suspect is caught for a felony and convicted of a lesser offense and receives little or no sentence. If he is not read the warning and returns he cannot be arrested for trespassing. If he was read, he can be arrested for trespassing and searched and that search could turn up stolen property that he will take with him if he is not arrested. Alas, often police officers do not think of the value of the trespass ordinance when they arrest a person for a more serious offense. I hope that at UM the officers are required to give the warning to all criminal suspects if they have no authority to be on campus.

This sounds like a person who may belong on a "Trespass List" from DPS.
