Police: Van, building vandalized with spray paint in Ann Arbor

By Kyle Feldscher

Someone sprayed a van and the siding of the University Townhouses Co-Op Monday night with red and black paint, Ann Arbor police said.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said officers went at 3 a.m. Tuesday to the 3400 block of Braeburn Circle after being notified of the spray paint on the sides of the Dodge Sprinter van and the building. Bush said a 38-year-old Ann Arbor man reported the incident to police.

The vandalism occurred between 8:30 p.m. Monday and 7:20 a.m. Tuesday, Bush said. Both sides of the vehicle were spray painted along with some siding on the building, she said.

Two suspects were seen in the area, but detailed descriptions were not available.

Anyone with information on the case in encouraged to call the Ann Arbor police anonymous tip line at 734-794-6939.

This is not the first time in the last several weeks that something like this has happened. There have been windows broken by rocks or brick, rocks thrown at residents and firework let off. The coop has hired a security firm to patrol. The coop feels that these teenagers, and yes I know they are between 14 and 15 years old. I was someone who had rocks thrown at. I have seen these same young men several times in the coop. University Townhouses Cooperative is a wonderful place to live, we have lived there for over 24 years. This is awful. I hope that who ever these young people are get caught and are punished, plus their parents made to pay for any damages or evicted if they are coop members.

There is no indication that the vandal was a youth. Let's be careful about demonizing youth, considering there is a much wider age range of people capable of vandalism. Adults have been known for it as well.

I live out here and saw the van this morning heading to work, the van owner was talking to an officer. I didn't see the building graffiti. I was pretty appalled when I saw this though. In recent weeks we've had a security truck riding our property because they said that vandalism had been occurring as well as some harrassment of members, the alleged suspects are supposedly teens. I've lived here almost 13 years and not had this kind of trouble, its really disheartening.

Maybe store owners should not sell spray paint to anyone younger than 21 yrs. of age.

Store owners don't sell spray paint to kids (not typically), years ago I had to show my idea when buying some paint myself. They starte carding them and stopping sales due to huffing. Just like booze and cigarettes, kids will get their hands on them if they try hard enough.

The only way to handle vandalism is to make the parents pay something for the cleanup, because there is no punishment, if the parents had to pay something, I dought there would be much vandalism..

nvragain- I could have been more clear, I apologize. There were two separate reports to police, the second of which came later on this morning. I put the 7:20 a.m. time in there to encompass the total time that all of the vandalism took place.

The police were on scene at 3am and the vandalism was to have already taken place. Yet your story then states the vandalism occured between 8pm Monday and 7:20am Tuesday. Do we see anything wrong with the time frame?
