From WCSO

A holdup alarm went off at the TCF Bank at 2150 Packard Road at the corner of Hewitt in Ypsilanti Township at about 2:25 p.m., according to a media release.

While deputies were driving to the scene they learned a crime had taken place and they called for backup.

The suspect ran away from the bank after the holdup. He was not located in the immediate area, though officers searched the vicinity.

The man is described as a white male, 5 feet 6 inches tall, 165 lbs. He was wearing dark colored pants, a white dress shirt, tie and red jacket.

Sgt. Geoffrey Fox said no weapon was observed during the robbery.

Deputies did not release further details of the crime, but they did release photos taken from bank surveillance cameras.

Anyone with information is asked to call the W.C.S.O. Confidential Tip line at (734) 973-7711 or 1-800-SPEAK UP.

No Service without Shirt and Shoes: He must be wearing good running shoes; with dress shoes he would not be able to get away easily.

The suspect was probably on his way to Zingerman's and needed a way to pay for lunch....it was either rob a bank or get a home equity loan.

I'm no t so concerned with the shirt and tie, as it adds a bit of class to a blue collar crime. Barack and G.W.'s friends stole a lot f money from banks whilst wearing ties as well. But the Members Only jacket from JC Penney? C'mon robber-baron dude! It totally negates the cool get-up.

"Early this morning, Ypsilanti Police Officers apprehended the suspect from the TCF bank robbery that took place yesterday afternoon. The suspect, a 50 year old Ypsilanti man was arrested in the area of Towner when the YPD officer recognized him from the bank surveillance photographs released yesterday. Some of the money that was stolen was recovered during the arrest."

He looks a little bit like Ohio coach, Urban Meyer. Also, note the red, possible Ohio jacket. I wonder how much of a reward is being offered?

Only if it was a truly stylish SHORT-SLEEVE dress shirt, a la Woody and Tressel.

"While deputies were driving to the scene they learned a crime had taken place and they called for backup". So were the deputies just happen to be going to the same bank? Why were they going to the bank in the first place? When was it decided that they needed backup? Based on what? Somebody (bank staff) called police and mentioned they were being robbed, or just robbed? Though March 2011 might had been the last "reported" robbery, I can vaguely remember this is at least the fourth time this place has been hit in the last few years. This has become pretty common for this bank.

The KeyBank at Wastenaw and Hewitt. That thing has been robbed ALOT. For a while a few years back, it was getting robbed two or three times a year.

I thought this bank had been robbed a couple of times last year but then my wife pointed out that was the bank on the corner of Washtenaw and Hewitt.

I really thought another robbery had taken place more recently. It does seem fairly frequent. Police were dispatched when the alarm call came in. It was moments later that it was a confirmed robbery. During business hours, I'm guessing that's what they expected. There are accidental alarm trips, especially during openings and closings at various businesses. Sometimes they're so frequent that a municipality will as a business to reimburse them for all of the public safety runs on "bad" alarm calls.

There have been several bank robberies in Wayne and Oakland counties recently and the robber was wearing a shirt and tie also.

Just out of curiosity, how does one rob a bank without a weapon? I always thought it was a necessary component, otherwise why would you hand over the money?

Solitude

Sun, Mar 17, 2013 : 4:42 p.m.

Most banks have a policy that tellers will not argue or do anything other than what they are told if someone indicates a holdup, visibly armed or not. I guess it's not hard to understand why, given the potential safety concerns and the litigious nature of our society, but I can see the other side. If some idiot comes in, never threatens a weapon and demands money, it would be nice to be able to say "no, get out," or say no and then have 5 people leap over the counter and pummel the idiot until police arrive. Oh well.....

He is clearly making a gun out of his right thumb and index finger in the 3rd photo. It appears to be a military-style assault hand, and lord knows why anyone would need one of those.

Did he claim to have a weapon, or otherwise threaten violence?

Milton Shift

Sun, Mar 17, 2013 : 7:17 p.m.

Yes, it matters. A typical bank robbery simply involves someone walking up to the teller and handing them a note that says "I want money" and nothing else. He's wearing a mask, so it looks like he may have made a threat. Usually they don't want that kind of attention. Next time you get hassled for money by a beggar, think about whether it matters if they implied that they were armed or not.

Does it matter? He robbed a bank. Wonder if these questions would be asked if the suspect was of a different ethnic background?

@WalkingJoe - I just added a photo showing the shirt and tie (and a mask!). @Eli - Kinda harsh, but that's OK. Just trying to avoid "man" or "police seek" after a long day. @Eli part 2 - it is news, not "news." @Youwhine - Thanks.

"Robber" is how my three-year-old son refers to people who steal, though the term reads as a childish synonym for burglar in a "news" piece like this.

Youwhine

Actually, the two are not at all synonyms. A robbery involves a taking by force (from a person). A burglary refers to taking something during a break in. Usually news outlets misuse the term robbery when reporting burglaries. For example, saying "the homeowners came home and discovered they had been robbed while they were gone". In this case, the term was used correctly.
