Saline fraud suspect named in scam using state's medical marijuana form to steal identity and commit crimes

By Art Aisner

A Saline man who was wanted on fraud charges in Oakland County is now facing counts of fraud and computer crimes for a scam involving a medical marijuana card.

Curtis Wesley Sandig, 24, faces one count of identity theft and one count of using a computer to commit a crime, according to a warrant signed Friday in Washtenaw County District Court.

Arraignment and preliminary hearing dates are pending, officials said.

Saline police arrested Sandig in January after another man reported a bank account and credit cards were opened in his name and he suspected Sandig because Sandig had access to sensitive personal information, police said.

Investigators learned that Sandig and the initial victim were trying to obtain medical marijuana cards through the same caretaker, and that they filled out forms together in Sandig’s apartment. Sandig kept a copy of the man’s form and used several pieces of information to commit multiple frauds worth approximately $7,500, reports said.

In addition to the financial transactions, Sandig is suspected of joining an online dating service and trying to open other online memberships using the stolen identity.

Detective Don Lupi said officers searched Sandig’s apartment along East Michigan Avenue, which was equipped with surveillance cameras, and confiscated a computer. Police did a forensic search of the computer and then submitted their findings to local prosecutors.

Sandig was already wanted by authorities in Waterford Township for check fraud. A felony bench warrant was issued late last year and he was turned over to authorities there shortly after his arrest.

Oakland County court records show Sandig was arraigned on the charges there Feb. 9 and posted $2,500 bond. He failed to show up for a pre-trial hearing March 1 and is wanted again on a bench warrant.
