University of Michigan football season tickets stolen from 4 people

By Lee Higgins

Four people recently reported to Ann Arbor police that their University of Michigan football season tickets were stolen from their homes.

A 21-year-old woman told police that between noon Sept. 3 and noon Saturday, her tickets were taken from her bedroom in the 800 block of McKinley Avenue, police spokeswoman Lt. Renee Bush said. Bush did not have further details.

Also, a 20-year-old man told police that he left his tickets on his bed at his home in the 900 block of Oakland Avenue, and they were stolen between 10 p.m. Friday and 1 a.m. Saturday, Bush said. Numerous people had been in and out of the home during that time.

In the third case, a 19-year-old man reported that his tickets were taken from his home in the 1400 block of Washtenaw Avenue between 10 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. Saturday, Bush said. A number of people had been in and out of his home during that time.

And a 21-year-old man told police at 2:50 p.m. Saturday that he left his tickets in his top dresser drawer in his bedroom in the 800 block of Tappan Avenue, and they were stolen. Bush did not have specifics.

Anyone with information can call the police department's tipline at 734-794-6939.

I found 2 season tickets. I called the UM Athletic office and told them to try and find out who's they were. This was 30 years back though.

The tickets that were stolen are stolen property and subject to be confiscated as such. One of the reasons they are reported stolen is that the UM athletic dept ticket office requires it. Once you report your tickets stolen you get a receipt for your seats. If there is someone there with the tickets, regardless of who they bought them from, they get to leave and the original owner gets to sit. It's part of the let the buyer beware and the CJ system. If you don't know the tickets were stolen, you will not get charged for possession of stolen property, but they are still stolen and you can't have them. Another risk of buying from an "unauthorized" seller. I am not saying that UM ticket holders are ever sneaky but in event a ticket holder has a friend who wants to go to the game and a false crime is reported: all parties takes the chance it will not be found out. His friend will cram himself into a spot far from the seat on the ticket. Maybe now with the scan they can ID stolen tickets at the gate. If stolen tickets are bought on the street, sure you get a description of the seller, but not too many people get a name, address, phone and by the time you ID the person with the tickets the sellers are long gone.

Is this really that hard of a crime to solve? Somewhere there are records of the tickets being sold then, simply pick up who ever sits in those seats or find out who they bought them from. That really has to be the stupidest thing. All anyone needs to do is watch the seats and grab whoever shoes up. Hard to say who is the dumbest, people who leave their valuables - and season tickets are high priced merchandise - or the one's who steal them.

Well, hopefully, the victims remember what the seat and games assignments were.
