Shell gas station in Ann Arbor robbed at gunpoint

By Lee Higgins

Ann Arbor police are investigating an armed robbery reported early Sunday at the Shell gas station/convenience store at 2500 Jackson Ave.

Two men walked into the store at 1:30 a.m., and one of them pulled a handgun and demanded money from a 40-year-old male clerk, police spokeswoman Lt. Renee Bush said.

The men assaulted the clerk before taking an undisclosed amount of cash and running away, Bush said.

The clerk declined medical attention, Bush added.

Both men were described as black, 5 feet, 7 inches tall, in their late teens to early 20s and thin. They were wearing black clothing, police said.

Anyone with information can call the police department's tip line at (734) 794-6939.

I go to this gas station and the employees are respectable and very nice. I have conversed with them on many occasions. Although I live a mile or two away I consider them to be my neighbors. This is unacceptable and the perpetrators should be punished

I feel so bad for the owners and employees at the Shell. They always remember exactly what I want from behind the counter and I'm sure if they knew my name they'd remember that too. It's the only gas station I frequent in town that still provides that kind of old school personal service. I sincerely hope the criminals are caught, convicted and sentenced to long stretches of their lives in prison.

Why did the clerk decline medical attention? Possibly because just pointing a gun at somebody doesn't actually hurt them and they didn't require medical attention. No mention was made of any assult, so why whould any medical attention be required? Regarding police staffing levels: Why do you think this particular gas station got robbed? Most likely becuase it is about a quarter mile from the freeway. Those two guys were in and out and heading east within 3 minutes. Unless the cop was having lunch at Zingerman's roadhouse, the perps were on the freeway before the cops even knew about the robbery.

Thanks Ellen. Not sure if the story was updated or I missed it. Odd, how sometimes you can read something two or three times and miss it. Maybe I kept looking at the second "paragraph" and subconsciously thought it described the entire robbery. Anyway, D- for reading comprehension for me.

"The men assaulted the clerk before taking an undisclosed amount of cash and running away, Bush said." is in the article that I just read ... maybe it was updated after you read it?

I feel bad for the clerk who is just trying to make a living. The article says that he declined medical attention - he probably doesn't have any medical insurance.

I think it's a family run place but I'm not certain. Judging by the cars they drive, I would think they would have medical insurance. They seem to be doing well for themselves. I hope their lost property was insured... but I think that's a requirement of opening up shop.

I would imagine any medical attention would be a workers comp claim. He was hurt on the job.

Ricebrnr Explain Detroit, Flint, Pontiac, Inkster etc.... Those cities all reside in a state that it is relatively easy to get a concealed pistol license and their crime rate is out of control. You see while guns might help protect citizens studies have shown that criminals don't take into consideration the possibility that their intended victim might have a weapon. So while I believe the clerk has the right to have a gun lets not fool ourselves in believing that scumbags take it into consideration, all they care about is getting the money or property so they can buy more dope or not have to go to work like a normal human being.

Hmmm well Detroit's crime rate did start going down after MI approved concealed carry in 2006. May be a coincidence. Considering the current police staffing levels of Detroit and Flint especially, I'd wager a guess that just maybe that has a lot to do with it. Detroit: <a href="http://www.detnews.com/article/20110426/METRO01/104260428/1409/METRO/Detroit%E2%80%99s-police-chief-reports-fewer-crime--improved-federal-compliance" rel='nofollow'>http://www.detnews.com/article/20110426/METRO01/104260428/1409/METRO/Detroit%E2%80%99s-police-chief-reports-fewer-crime--improved-federal-compliance</a> Flint: <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/17/magazine/mag-17YouRhere-t.html?_r=3&ref=magazine" rel='nofollow'>http://www.nytimes.com/2011/04/17/magazine/mag-17YouRhere-t.html?_r=3&amp;ref=magazine</a> I'd be most interested in reviewing the studies you are referencing. Please cite. Citations for you: 60% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they knew the victim was armed. 40% of convicted felons admitted that they avoided committing crimes when they thought the victim might be armed. Armed and Considered Dangerous: A Survey of Felons and Their Firearms, James Wright and Peter, Rossi, Aldine, 1986 Washington D.C. has essentially banned gun ownership since 1976 and has a murder rate of 56.9 per 100,000. Across the river in Arlington, Virginia, gun ownership is less restricted. There, the murder rate is just 1.6 per 100,000, less than three percent of the Washington, D.C. rate. &quot;lets not fool ourselves in believing that scumbags take it into consideration, all they care about is getting the money or property &quot; I disagree, they do in fact take it into consideration. Does more police actually mean less crime though? Here are some stats published last year by a liberal think-tank (<a href="http://www.drummajorinstitute.org/library/article.php?ID=7397)" rel='nofollow'>http://www.drummajorinstitute.org/library/article.php?ID=7397)</a>: "New York has 43 cops per 10,000 residents. Chicago and Philadephia have more cops per capita, but higher crime rates. San Diego has less crime than New York, and one-third fewer police officers per capita." Maybe our police cars need smaller gas tanks so there is at least a chance a police officer will be in the right place at the right time.

Yeah, liberal think tank. LOL. That's a oxymoron.

Hmmm, 1 of the cities mentioned does not allow citizens to legally carry at all. 2 of them have more restrictive concealed license rules than the rest of their state and are so onerous as to be a defacto ban (unless you are rich and/or well connected of course) And the last is in a may issue state, the least restrictive of the 4 cities in question... Must be a coincidence... The victim is the first responder to their own critical incident, food for thought.

Glad the clerk didn't have to have medical attention. I feel bad for all law enforcement, Emt's and Fire. Maybe some of city council members should wear their uniforms, and wear them 3 or 4 days a week. (start with week-ends). Wearing their hats just one day a week might work.
