Shotgun blast destroys mailbox in Augusta Township

By Lee Higgins

A shotgun blast destroyed a mailbox Monday in Augusta Township, Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies said.

About 1:45 a.m., a 40-year-old man who lives in the 13000 block of Bunton Road, heard several shotgun blasts near the road, sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tom Pennington said.

Deputies found that the mailbox was ruined, but were unable to locate any suspects. Anyone with information is asked to call the department's tip line at (734) 973-7711.

The victim in this case is an Augusta TWP trustee. The incident comes the night before a very unpopular (and public) vote involving township utilities. The vote will result in higher utility bills for Augusta TWP homeowners. Doubt this was kids.

It seems mailbox baseball has evolved, the suspects will be surprised to find out so has the sentence when caught.

This comment makes perfect sense. In the "olden days", idiot kids would play mailbox baseball: driving around hitting mailboxes with a baseball bat. Nowadays, kids use shotguns instead. I'd bet the destroying mailboxes crime will be the same, but unlawful discharge of a firearm and being an idiot in possession of a firearm would probably get tacked on. Make sense now?

Your comment doesn't really make sense. But destroying a mailbox is a Federal offense with severe penalties especially if there was mail in it.
