Police: Man 'kicked' cyclist off bike, threatened him with knife

By John Counts

Ypsilanti police arrested a 41-year-old man who allegedly "kicked" a 37-year-old Ypsilanti Township man off his bike and flashed a knife in attempt to steal the bike Wednesday evening.

Police were dispatched to Washtenaw Avenue and Ballard Street at 7:07 p.m. for the incident. According to a news release, the 37-year-old man was riding his bike down the street when the 41-year-old kicked him off to steal it.

When the victim resisted, the 41-year-old displayed a knife. The suspect was later apprehended. Ypsilanti police didn't have any other information about the incident Thursday afternoon, including where the 41-year-old man resided.

He's currently lodged at the Washtenaw County Jail and could face armed robbery charges.

Good job YPD. Over worked and underpaid. Keep up the good work. Us law abiding citizens love your work.

http://www.crimemapping.com/map.aspx?aid=6a6a4730-d69e-4c65-80bc-ab5b0798ffaa Yup, Ann Arbor apologists are out in force. And AA is SO much different week to week, check the actual data. Keep those blinders on as you waddle to and from the main street consortium restaurants, we've always been at war with Eurasia.

Interesting that some feel that lower population size leads to increased accuracy of statistics... .. and feel that providing verifiable sources of accurate data, and trying to correct inaccurate data, is a sign of a weakness in a position. I think AA has more to offer than an inaccurate "we're different from Ypsi in crime stats" banner, but darn some folks sure wave that "high". Oh wait, being high isn't a crime here, whack one more biased crime stat from our tree city. Its even more fun ( and equalizing) if you check out crimes per zip code, which to me reflect more accurately housing-areas-based-upon-human-geography.

However, Ann Arbor's rates are way under reported. Just attend a football game and then look at the underage drinking arrests and public intoxication arrests after the day is over. The police don't even try to arrest all the law breakers! They would need busses to haul them to the jail.

Suggest that while you're looking up stuff: you write down the population sizes of these two towns. Ypsi PER CAPITA crime rates are FAR above Ann Arbor's. And what about the Ypsilanti apologists - who post the defense strategies for Ypsi at every mention of a crime in that town?

Good thing it was in Ypsilanti. In Ann Arbor, he would have been jumped by at least six people, and left for dead on the sidewalk.

It took a couple or readings, but I agree with what I see in the end as your premise: assaults in AA tend to leave victims badly beaten, and are committed by groups of attackers. I agree based upon your cited instance as well as others I have read about as crimes committed within (typically) the Ann Arbor bar districts.

Funny that the crime stats are such that it has to be pointed out- else, it could be either city on a given evening, couldn't it....

"This kind of behavior, left unpunished in this super-liberal town of Ann Arbor" It was in Ypsi. But I agree that the judges need to pull their heads out of their robes and develop a reputation for harsh sentences. It still defies belief that convicted violent criminals who face serious sentences are being allowed to roam free as they await sentencing, even as their victims live in fear and disbelief.

I'm with Milton. Let's be scientific. According to research by Dan Ariely (see his book The Honest Truth About Dishonesty), people do not often decide whether to be honest based on the severity of punishments. It isn't a cost/benefit analysis, it's some stupid irrational behavior. The cost/benefit stuff might stop very rational-minded organized criminals. But harsh sentencing isn't a solution for crimes like this. Letting the criminals off easy with no other solution is not the answer either, of course…

Maybe it's time we use the scientific method to determine the best way to deal with social problems, rather than resorting to emotional moralizing and an irrational, counterproductive thirst for vengeance.

could be worse, sometimes they don't want your things and sometimes they don't have a reason. Let's hear the calls to ban knives...

"Let's hear the calls to ban knives..." --- No, no, they only want to ban the things which annoy them the most.- Therefore, it'll be calls to ban bicycles. ;-)

This is a very serious crime and I hope that the alleged perpetrator, if found guilty, will receive the appropriate sentence. This kind of behavior, left unpunished in this super-liberal town of Ann Arbor, encourages people to continue to do this and escalate their violence, as well. May the Counts in this County please follow sentencing guidelines and not make up their own rules as they go along.
