A teenager who pleaded guilty last month to negligent homicide in connection with the death of her friend during a car accident last fall in Salem Township was sentenced this afternoon to one year of probation.

Sapna Virdi, 18, of Canton was sentenced by Washtenaw County Circuit Judge Melinda Morris under the Holmes Youthful Trainee Act.

That means if Virdi successfully completes her probation, the conviction will be expunged.

Virdi was charged in the Oct. 20 death of her friend, 18-year-old Arashdeep Cheema of Canton, who was a passenger in her car.

Michigan State Police said Virdi was driving a 2008 Toyota Corolla east on North Territorial Road near Gotfredson Road when she stopped at a stop sign at an intersection. Police say she then continued driving and pulled into the path of a truck. Cheema died of injuries sustained in the collision.

Virdi, who was injured, is enrolled full time in college.

Prosecutors pursued the case against the wishes of the victim's family.
