U-M police warn parents on North Campus about man watching children
University of Michigan police issued a warning to parents on Monday, saying they received a report of a man acting suspiciously near children.
According to a crime alert, the man was closely watching a group of children as they played Sunday morning on the lawn of a home in the 1500 block of McIntyre on North Campus in Ann Arbor.
The resident who made the police report said spoke to the man, who then left.
According to the alert, the man is described as a white male in his 40s, 6'1" and 250 pounds with a large belly, a bald head with brown hair on the sides, a round face, blue eyes and a thin brown mustache. He was wearing a white long-sleeve T-shirt and gray sweatpants.
Anyone with information about this man is asked to contact campus police at 734/763-1131.

Why not report it? If it's something innocent, the man will say so. At least the cops could check the perv list (or whatever it's called) and see if this is someone who is legally not allowed around kids. Come on. If we can't keep an eye out for kids and help protect them, what good are we??

He is tapping his foot to the music. And he is glacing in the direction of children playing in the park. Oh God. Please send help!" "Remain calm sir. Officers are on the way."

So, when will being childless male in proximity to children become a crime?

There are playgrounds like that in NYC too, and tickets are even given for it (see http://gothamist.com/2011/06/06/ticketed_for_eating_a_doughnut_in_a.php ). It's kind of a trend--I know Miami at least considered legislation to that effect a couple years ago.

Where did you read anything about a crime being committed, suspected, or reported? Do you disapprove of people reporting activity they consider odd and perhaps worthy of concern, unless they can prove that a crime was either committed or being planned?

It already is in London.....I'm pretty sure there's an ordinance that makes it illegal for any "unaccompanied male" to be in most parks that children would frequent. They actually have signs......

This seems like borderline hysteria. He "closely watched"? What does this mean? Was it boys flying a kite and it brought back fun memories for him, or was it something else? Weak police reports, with so little to go on, make people fearful and some afraid to leave their homes or to let their children out of their sight, even when they go off to college. He didn't even approach or talk to anyone.

I think it is important to be vigilant, but I also think it is a horrible shame that our society has come to this point. I think it is a shame that adult males (or even older male children) cannot interact with children that are not out own in any way shape or form. Children are being taught to be afraid of their shadows and all men are viewed as potential sexual predators. My grandfather liked to watch children at play because it reminded him of his childhood, his own children, and what it was like to be carefree, pain free and joyful. Nowdays he would be issued a protection order.

I'd rather hear of a thousand false alarms, than of one case where something bad actually happened, where someone saw something a bit unusual in advance but didn't say anything because they felt they couldn't be certain of any cause for alarm. If something seems a bit weird, or raises the hair on the back of your neck, by all means take note, take pictures, and tell someone. Hopefully every single case will be a red herring, but they should all be considered worth looking in to. I don't think that's hysteria or paranoia, just an abundance of caution (which most parents find their kids worthy of).

Did this "resident" attend one of these ivy league colleges that wanted to make it a crime if a man looked inappropriately at a woman?

Does any one have updated information about the man who was assaulting females downtown a couple summers ago? Sketches of him were posted on buses, shop windows, etc., Whatever happened to that case? Was the perp found??

I want to say he got caught during his last assault but I'm not positive. I would think the news staff would have a much better recolection of it though.
