A University of Michigan student was arrested this morning, suspected of punching out the rear windshields of 4 cars in Ann Arbor while he was heavily intoxicated, authorities said.

Ann Arbor police officers arrested the 19-year-old man about 3 a.m. near the intersection of East University Avenue and Hill Street, where police responded to a report that a man threw a barbecue grill at a car, police spokeswoman Lt. Renee Bush said.

Bush said the grill didn't hit the car, but officers noticed that the man's hands were bleeding and there were pieces of glass in his knuckles. Officers had responded 2 hours earlier to the 800 block of South Forest Avenue, where rear windshields of 4 cars had been smashed out and blood was found on the cars, Bush said. The man is believed to be responsible for vandalizing those cars, Bush said.

Bush said the man was taken by ambulance to University of Michigan Hospital to be treated for his injuries. Police did not have a damage estimate.

Charges are pending.
