The stolen vehicle is further described as having rusted bumpers and an “8-foot ladder with pipe rack on the top and ‘AF Smith & Son Electric’ on the side,” according to the media summary.

Well, A.F. Smith got the van back. Just some background to the story...this is the second time in less than 2 months that the same van has been stolen from the same lot at St Joe. A.F. Smith employees recovered the van from Detroit both times thanks to concerned citizens in Detroit that decided to call the number on the side of the van after watching it sit unoccupied for 2 days. Each time, the door locks are punched out, the ignition collar is busted out, and boom, they drive off. They get to Detroit, empty all the contents, and in this case, the battery. Upon calling the police to let them know we have found it...they say "ok, thanks for letting us know. Drive it home and have a nice day."

As for the van being stolen...the van belongs to A.F. Smith Electric, Inc. The "& Sons" part was dropped years and years ago. The doors were locked and the thieves punched out the door lock on the passenger side. It was stolen from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital Campus where it was parked in the "designated construction parking lot" the workers are required to park in when performing service for the hospital. Another A.F. Smith employee saw the van speed past with a security guard in "hot pursuit", but since they are not allowed to break traffic laws, the thieves easily jumped onto I-94 and get away. I can't figure out why the security guard wasn't on the phone with the police...this should have been an easy one to catch...THEY WERE DRIVING A BILLBOARD!!!
