Ypsilanti Township woman pleads guilty to animal cruelty in starvation death of dog

By Lee Higgins

An Ypsilanti Township woman pleaded guilty to two counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty after investigators say she starved a dog, the Humane Society of Huron Valley said.

Daria Lewis, 20, will be sentenced Sept. 17 in Washtenaw County District Court, according to a news release. She pleaded guilty last week.

Investigators say they found the remains of a dog that was kept locked in the closet of her apartment after they received a call from a maintenance worker.

An autopsy found the dog died of starvation, the release said. Its remains were found a month after the dog died.

Investigators found "plenty" of dog food in the cupboard, the release said.

I could not agree more with all of the previous comments! I also find it hard to believe that no one in the apartment heard or saw or smelled anything prior to the discovery. Her picture should be posted and her name should be listed with the picture. What a tragedy I have no sympathy for such an individual!!!

PEOPLE THAT DO THESE TYPES OF THINGS SHOULD RECEIVE MORE THAN A SLAP ON THE WRIST!

One of the many heartbreaking and enraging aspects of this is that this behavior is still only classified as a misdemeanor. Think of the suffering of this poor, uncomprehending animal, and then realize that even if this human sewage is punished as much as the law allows, it will be little more than a slap on the wrist. We've got to change our laws.

it saddens and angers me to think how selfishly this woman behaved. the thought of that poor animal suffering, slowly starving to death, perhaps in the dark, alone, is almost too much to conceive.

How sad. Perhaps a couple of weeks in jail with a very limited amount of bread and water, will help her understand the pain of starvation. The dog could not get into the cupboard and feed itself. What a useless piece of humanity this person is.

Please tell me that she is barred from ever owning any pet.
