A convicted felon who investigators say had 10 guns, cocaine and marijuana in his Ypsilanti home when it was raided in January, has been released on a $10,000 unsecured bond, federal court records show.
Derreck Davison, 50, was arraigned Friday in federal court in Detroit on charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, maintaining a drug premises, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug-trafficking crime, court records show.
Livingston and Washtenaw Narcotics Enforcement Team records offer new details about the case against Davison, who is accused of running a drug house out of his East Ainsworth Street home. It's the same home where officers spotted an off-duty University of Michigan police officer hours before he was arrested with cocaine in his car, reports say.
On Jan. 15, investigators executed a “no-knock” search warrant at Davison's home at 5:50 p.m., using a battering ram to get inside, yelling, "Police Search Warrant," a LAWNET report says.
Investigators found Davison in an upstairs bedroom, the report says. According to the report, a handgun was on a headboard, a bag of cocaine was on a dresser and cash and marijuana were scattered on the bed. Several long guns were propped up against the wall, the report says.
Investigators recovered a total of 10 guns, two of which were reported stolen out of Ypsilanti, the report says. In addition, officers found roughly 55 grams of cocaine, more than 350 grams of marijuana, more than 3,000 counterfeit DVDs, three scales, a police scanner and drug paraphernalia, the report says.
According to the report, Davison told officers he works at Sam's Club and smokes marijuana and uses cocaine, but isn't a dealer.
Davison's girlfriend showed up during the bust, the report says, telling investigators two of the guns were hers, but she didn't know about the others.
Regarding the alleged counterfeit DVDs, Davison told investigators that he has a relative who sings and he records his music on equipment in the home, the report says.
The search warrant was executed two days after officers followed an off-duty University of Michigan police officer to the home as they were conducting surveillance on him.
The officer, Charles Eugene Beatty III, was arrested hours later during a traffic stop in Ypsilanti, when police recovered less than a gram of cocaine. The officer's employment ended, he pleaded guilty to possessing less than 25 grams of cocaine and was sentenced to probation.
Records show investigators obtained the search warrant after digging through Davison's trash near the curb on Jan. 8 and Jan. 15 and finding marijuana stems and seeds.
Davison has prior convictions for possessing less than 25 grams of cocaine, use of cocaine, operating while under the influence of liquor and possession of marijuana, court records show.
U.S. Magistrate Judge Virginia Morgan set a number of conditions on the bond, including that Davison surrender his passport and not possess guns.
