Registered sex offender from Ypsilanti accused of sexually assaulting boy

By Heather Lockwood

An Ypsilanti man currently on federal probation for receiving child pornography is accused of sexually assaulting a boy he knows multiple times over the span of a decade.

Dervin Richard Mood, 74, has been charged with three counts of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, which carries a maximum sentence of life in prison, and one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.

The offenses are alleged to have occurred against one victim multiple times from 2000 to 2011 at Mood's Ypsilanti home, according to court records.

Mood was arraigned Saturday and is being held in the Washtenaw County Jail on a $150,000 cash surety bond, according to court records.

Mood registered with the Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry in July 2010, the same month he was sentenced to one day in prison and five years of supervised release, after being convicted in January 2009 of receiving child pornography, according to U.S. District Court Eastern District of Michigan records.

A condition of Mood's release prohibited him from having any contact with individuals younger than 18 without the express permission of the probation department, according to the records.

Court records indicate Mood, who has five adult children and holds a master's degree in elementary education, has worked as a public school teacher and owned and directed a child care center from 1975 to 1982.

Federal court records show court-ordered psychological evaluations determined Mood scored in the "low risk range" as to "child molest behavior" and "probability of sexual assault."

Mood caught the attention of law enforcement as early as 2003, when Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and Oakland County sheriff's deputies raided a Midland area home and interviewed a man who admitted to molesting his own children, records show.

During discussions with him and through a forensic examination of the man's computer, agents say they identified Mood as a trader of child pornography. About 66 images of naked children were found on Mood's computer, of which 39 constituted child pornography, according to federal court records. Some printed images of child pornography also were found in Mood's house, which matched the images found on his computer.

Mood is to appear back in court March 8 for a preliminary hearing.

Ypsilanti Police Det. Sgt. Troy Fulton could not be reached for comment today about the new case against Mood.

As my identity is not apparent to those reading, I can be candid. This man molested my husband, my step son, and as his own child said, "would molest any boy he could get his hands on as long as he is alive!". I saw the pictures, as I am involved in the prosecution of this man. He HAS been raping little boys, infants even, since the late 60's. He deserves MUCH worse than what MI justice Dept. can give him. Although I love MI, AND am a human rights advocate, I fail to understand how the death penalty shouldn't be used in cases like this- At any rate, the prison system will teach him all about the error of his ways. Those boys, even the murderers, have no empathy for a disgusting abomination of an animal such as Dervin Mood.

At his age this will be a short lived prison stay.

His defense for the first arrest was he was "too old and feeble for prison". Look it up! I hope that he lives long and rots as long as possible for all the lives he has destroyed.

This guy does not need help because he is not sick.Until our society makes child sexual molestation a life sentence or something close to it his kind will continue their destruction because they don't stop unless they are in jail or die.If they are on probation they will molest. They are manipulative and know all the right things to say; but all evidence shows they will do it again and again. The reason "help" doesn't work is because they have no "sickness" they are predators. I forgot which state keeps them in mental hospitals well past their release date on the premise they are not cured. It may be an end around but it works.

I agree with you completely! I don't understand how a woman who has been battered for years and years and made to sleep on the floor and eat off the floor as if she is a dog- prostituted out and beaten when she didn't make enough- and she finally murdered her abuser when he fell into a drunken sleep...SHE goes to prison for life but predators like Dervin Mood continue molesting for decades... There are men with their own families all over the country who were molested by this man. He deserves a penalty not fitting for me to post on this venue...

This person has placed himself in direct care and ineraction with children for decades. How many lives has he hurt? I so wish he had been brought to justice many years ago. What a disgusting thing he is.

This is a tragedy for all concerned, particularly the children. No, he doesn't arouse any sympathy; but he is a sick man, who probably knows that his actions are morally abhorrent, but can't help himself. He should be kept away from society, since there's probably not much can be done for him.

It is extremely difficult to comment on this story without going into some kind of rage. Excuse me while I rage.... There. It is beyond my comprehension why monsters engage in this kind of abhorrent behavior. Yes, they need help, but I'm not sure that they deserve much in the way of sympathy or compassion.

Heather: So he was evaluated as "low risk" for molesting children by the federal court and now it is alleged that he was molesting during the time of the federal court evaluation? I think since tax paying readers are paying for the federal court and such evaluations, they would appreciate the 5W's on these evaluations.
