Marijuana seized during Ypsilanti traffic stop

By Lee Higgins

A man was arrested Sunday after Ypsilanti police found marijuana and an open bottle of liquor in a car during a traffic stop, a police incident log said.

The 22-year-old man was stopped near the intersection of East Forest and North River Street after an officer spotted him driving without a seat belt, according to the log.

The officer saw him shove something under a seat and smelled an odor of marijuana inside the car when he was stopped at about 1:05 p.m., the log said.

Police say they found a large baggie of suspected marijuana and open bottle of rum during a search of the car.

The officer saw the perp shove something under the seat...no kidding...and smelled an ordor of mariguana..no surprise. But people seem to think it's okay to smoke pot and drive? The law is the law, DUI is different from DWI but only in regards to the substance...being under a doctor's care on prescribed medications can affect driving and one can be issued a ticket for being under the influence. Legalize Pot? I hear a lot of people saying that, but how many have actually lobbied their elected officials for change? If people don't like the laws, work to change them. In the meantime, obey the law. However, people that have no honor or ethics break the law all the time...as simple as disobeying a pedestrian traffic signal to DUI and/or DWI...

Just because they said an open bottle of liquor was found does not mean the kid was drinking or drunk. an open bottle of liquor means the seal had been broken. The drinking of this liquor could have occurred on a different day. If alcohol is found with the seal broken anywhere except the trunk of the car it constitutes as an open intoxicant. As for the pot, give the kid a break half the cops I know smoke pot.

Not surprising, if one hasn't enough respect for a simple law such as wearing a seat-belt, one most likely will break other major laws. And even if pot was legal, driving under the influence of it would still be illegal.

Legalize the pot, throw him in the slammer for drinking and driving.
