Police seek public's help in finding hit-and-run driver who struck pedestrian

By Kyle Feldscher

Ypsilanti police detectives are soliciting the public’s help in trying to find the driver in a hit-and-run incident Saturday night that left an Ypsilanti man fighting for his life.

Detective Joe Yuhas said police responded at 10:30 p.m. Saturday to the intersection of Michigan Avenue and Huron Street after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle there. Yuhas said the man was crossing Michigan Avenue while walking along Huron Street and was hit by an eastbound vehicle.

The 55-year-old Ypsilanti resident was propelled about 20 feet after being hit by the vehicle, which then left the area, Yuhas said. Witnesses said someone in a pickup truck that was following the suspect vehicle stopped and tended to the injured man until emergency crews arrived.

The man is still in the surgical intensive care unit at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township, Yuhas said. He suffered broken legs and unknown head injuries but is expected to survive. However, his condition has prevented police from speaking to him about the incident.

The speed limit in the area is 35 miles per hour, but Yuhas said it’s still unknown what speed the vehicle was traveling when it hit the man.

Yuhas said a witness told police the suspect vehicle may have been an older model Cadillac. He said the vehicle would likely have front end damage.

Anyone with any information on the incident is encouraged to call the police department, he said.

“Basically, we’re looking for anybody who may have witnessed the accident,” Yuhas said. “Anybody that may have information will be helpful.”

Yuhas can be reached either by email at jyuhas@cityofypsilanti.org or by phone at 734-482-9872.

I am sure people can read the road names on their own and figure it out, but I thought I'd point out that the mark on your map is a little off before someone less polite did so.

Unfortunately, these hit and run accidents are becoming more common. Get off your cell phones drivers! Pay attention! I've seen so many close calls on the streets around A2, and in every case, the driver has a phone glued to their ear. We need laws in MI to ban cell phone use in cars. Period.

I am positive there were hit-and-run accidents (and other types of accidents) way before the advent of cell phones. It probably isn't a good idea to jump to such a specific conclusion.

i've had cars come quite close to me walking with the light in that intersection.. recently a Suburban almost took me out.. you just have to guess that no one stops for pedestrians in Ypsilanti.. on a recent walk down Washtenaw from my bank back to the Service station who would only take cash.. (it's a very untrusting World) i was just about mashed twice.. i got hit with an armful of groceries & planted on a hood last Winter in a Supermarket lot.. that was East of Carpenter btw.. when people are on their way to class or work they can come flying out of anywhere hellbent for election.. you just have to guess the only thing they care about is themselves.. may the mercy of the good Lord be w/ all us time to time pedestrians. As drivers we need to respect the scooters, bicycles & motorcylists, too.. the crotch rockets can fend for themselves..

Just sitting here hoping somebody can help the police department find this suspect. (and I suppose the driver doesn't know or think anyone was hit) I pray this man recovers fully.

If there were witnesses, couldn't they provide any more details about the car, like color or at least light or dark, or whether "older model Cadillac" means 90's old or 70's-80's land barge old? I'm sure there are plenty of old Cadillacs around with some front end damage (one's parked in front of my house right now), so whatever little extra details may be available to narrow the parameters a bit could be helpful. Seems like if witnesses could name a possible make, they could at least tell if it was white, black, or somewhere in between.

Sorry, It's meant to be sarchastic. It's an old local saying that dates back to the 1930's. Obviously over the years... things have changed. If you check my comment on the woman with the knife in Ann Arbor, I mentioned that nothing good happened East OR West of Carpenter Rd. Sorry to offend. It was not intended.

Really?

Yeah and Ann Arbor is so perfect. Keep telling yourself that. Have you ever actually left Ann Arbor?
