Ypsilanti police seize marijuana after traffic stop

By Lee Higgins

A man was taken into custody this morning and released after Ypsilanti police found more than 22 grams of suspected marijuana on him, a police incident log said.

No charges have been filed against the 22-year-old man; the drugs are being sent to a lab for testing, police said.

Officers were conducting surveillance in the 300 block of Pearl Street and saw the man and several other people walking by, the log said.

The man got into a van, which officers stopped near the intersection of Ballard Street and West Cross Street about 12:42 a.m., according to the log.

Investigators found a small bag of marijuana in his back pocket, then brought him to the department and strip searched him, finding the rest of the suspected drugs, the log said.

Officers also seized $142 from him, the log said.

racerx, i live in ypsilanti and am pleased the police are able to do the proactive things they are doing w/ their limited resources. if you'd look at the other stories on the website you'll notice that they've made several arrests from people leaving this unknown location in the 300 block of Pearl. Thanks YPD! sorry everyone can't put their starbucks down and appreciate hard work.

If officers were conducting ahem..."...survelillance..." was it at the dwelling that the man came from? What happend to the other people in the van? As Prof Gates can attest, though while he was AHWB, these guys were DWB, which, people hate to admit it, happens all the time. So, what made police pull them over? Did they base this on the dwelling of where they came from? Or, did they have a tip that this person was carrying and would be in the area? If they were conducting surveillance and the suspect brought from a certain dwelling why wasn't the dwelling raided?

we should push the City to change the law to a civil infraction for personal amounts such as this, like Ann Arbor's law. Is Ypsilanti a sister City in name only? While it does sound like there may have been some dealing involved (hence the surveillance) this is a minor crime story and would have made the tiny Police Beat section in the old snooze

On what grounds did the police stop the vehicle in the first place? Oh wait... i guess they're allowed to do whatever they want nowadays... "Move along citizen"

22 grams, that is about.75 of an ounce, right? Why is this the headline story? That could easily be for personal consumption.
