A man was arrested after Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies say he wrecked his car in July, left the scene and reported the car was stolen to avoid taking responsibility.

Corey Eugene-Ross Thomas, 30, of Ypsilanti Township, was arraigned Monday at the county jail on charges of filing a false report of a felony and driving while his license was suspended, county court records show.

On July 10, deputies responded to the 2000 block of Washtenaw Avenue at about 8 p.m. after a man called 911 to report his car was stolen, records show.

During the investigation, deputies determined the caller had crashed the car and reported it stolen to avoid taking responsibility, a sheriff's department media summary said. It's unclear where the crash occurred.

Sheriff's department spokesman Derrick Jackson did not return a phone call seeking comment on the case.

Thomas was released on $2,000 bond, with the right to post 10 percent, records show.

He is scheduled to return to court for a preliminary hearing on Oct. 27.
