Ypsilanti Township man convicted of possessing child porn is sentenced to probation

By Lee Higgins

An Ypsilanti Township man who admitted to possessing and soliciting child pornography was sentenced this afternoon by Washtenaw County Circuit Judge Melinda Morris to five years of probation.

Charles Robert Clemons, 55, pleaded guilty on Feb. 14 to using a computer to commit a crime and three counts of possessing child sexually abusive material, court records show.

Investigators say the illegal activity occurred at his South Grove Street home on April 7, 2010. Clemons reached a sentencing agreement with Morris that spared him any time behind bars.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, a law enforcement agency, investigated the case, but it was not prosecuted in federal court. U.S. Postal Inspector Wylie Christopher, who is based in Detroit, could not immediately be reached for comment this afternoon.

Clemons will be required to register as a sex offender.

Let him who is without sin throw the first stone. Not everything is the way it appears or is printed.

This sort of stuff IS disturbing, yes. But the real criminals are out there making and distributing it. Let's encourage law enforcement to concentrate on them...

While child porn is disturbing, is jail time really necessary for this? Being a registered sex offender just ended any kind of life this guy had. Where he lives and works is going to be slim pickings... jail time would have guaranteed a warm place for him to stay. I say 5 years probation and registered sex offender is plenty for this guy.

Jimmy, the people responsible for creating the child porn should go to jail. Definitely.

Why not ask the parents of the exploited children if jail time is necessary?

How is probation going to fix this horrible crime?? And now at 55 yrs. of age has to register as a sex offender. I wonder if he able to keep his computer toys?
