Deadline for applicants to fill vacant Ann Arbor school board seat extended

The Ann Arbor school district has extended its deadline for applying for a vacant school board seat as it debates whether to switch to November elections.

Anyone who wants to apply for the seat vacated by Trustee Helen Gates-Bryant, who resigned last week, has until 4 p.m. Dec. 3.

District spokeswoman Liz Margolis said in an e-mail that the board is considering moving its May elections to November general elections as a cost-saving measure. The board is expected to decide by Dec. 16.

The Ypsilanti school board also is considering moving its election cycle.

"If a decision is made to move the election, the term for the board position vacated by Helen Gates-Bryant last week will run through December 31, 2010 (new board terms would then run January 1 through December 31)," Margolis wrote.

Here's a chance for all those people ranting about 'wasteful school spending' to do something about it. Won't hold my breath.
