Deputies arrest driver accused of fleeing after his car struck a woman walking her dogs in Ypsilanti Township

By Amalie Nash

Authorities say a man driving on a suspended license struck a woman out walking her dogs and fled in his car after claiming he planned to get help.

With the help of neighbors and the woman, Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputies tracked down the accused driver at his Ypsilanti Township home and arrested him, sheriff's spokesman Derrick Jackson said.

The hit-and-run occurred at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday as the woman was walking her dogs in the 1100 block of Hawthorne Drive in Ypsilanti Township.

Jackson said the woman was in the street when she was struck by a car, and the driver got out and asked if she was OK. When she said no, he said he would call 911 and drove away, Jackson said.

A woman returning home heard screams and dogs barking and discovered the victim lying in the street, Jackson said. The woman suffered a broken leg and was taken to the hospital; her dogs were uninjured.

Jackson said neighbors were able to provide limited information on the car, and the victim provided a description of the man. Deputies searched the area and found the car parked near the man's house, which is in the same area, Jackson said.

The man was wanted on a warrant for driving on a suspended license, Jackson said. No information was available today on whether the man has been charged in the hit-and-run.

@Shitari123 Correct it is absurd, but I like to make this argument onsidering how many reports of this type of incident lately and due to how many people cry out for bans on other tools used in crimes. Funny how no one thinks it's absurd when its something else other than cars injuring people.

Some people just can't bring themselves to do the right thing. I don't know what else to do with them but throw them in the slammer. It probably won't teach anybody anything, but at least he's not out driving with a suspended license and running over more people.
