Deputies investigating Ypsilanti Township homicide; 1 in custody, 2 more sought

Updated story: Suspected gunman arrested in fatal shooting in Ypsilanti Township; third suspect still being sought

Washtenaw County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a shooting that occurred after 8 p.m. Saturday at Schooner Cove Apartments in Ypsilanti Township.

The shooting is now being investigated as a homicide, a sheriff's spokesman confirmed at 10 p.m.

The victim, identified only as a male, was shot inside an apartment in the 5000 block of Schooner Cove Drive.

Despite initial reports that the victim was transported to an area hospital for treatment, he did die on the scene, said Derrick Jackson of the sheriff's department.

Calls came into police dispatch just after 8:23 p.m., Jackson said.

"The original call said there was a male gunshot victim" in the apartment, Jackson said.

Three suspects fled the scene in a vehicle, and "one was apprehended shortly afterwards," Jackson said.

Two suspects remained at large in the hours immediately following the killing.

A motive for the shooting has not been determined, Jackson added.

"This was not a fully random act," Jackson said. "The people knew each other."

The shooting took place in the ground-floor apartment belonging to a relative of the victim, Jackson said.

"He was a visitor to that apartment," Jackson said.

Deputies remained on the scene for several hours, searching the apartment and gathering evidence.

Other deputies are searching for the two additional suspects, Jackson said. Sources said one of the suspects still at large is believed to have been the shooter.

"They're actively looking for them now," Jackson said.

The suspect in custody is a 22-year-old resident of Ypsilanti Township who was apprehended in the township.

Further details remain unavailable, including any identification of the victim and the circumstances of how the suspect was taken into custody.

The apartment complex is located off of Huron River Drive, east of South Huron, on the edge of Ford Lake.

The apartment where the shooting took place is on the western edge of the complex.

Jackson emphasized that police believe the complex is secure and that the suspects will not return to the scene.

The story is that a young man was murdered. Gone is one mothers son, one childs daddy, sisters who greive the loss of their brother, children who grieve the loss of a uncle, a girlfriend who will raise her child alone. So many lives touched by a senseless act of violence. Praying for all them! Violence happens all over this country, everyday in every community, a very sad story indeed!

Unfortunate things happen everywhere; however, I bet living anywhere other than Ypsi and Ypsi TWSP would increase your odds for survival other than Detroit, Flint and Pontiac.

All of you are so worried about the location of this incident that you fail to see that you should be worried about the person who was violently murdered in front of his girlfriend, the mother of his beautiful child who now has no father. You should be commenting on the life lost in such a tragic way. You should be ashamed of yourselves for even commenting on the location of this place in leui of the real story! RIP JASON HOOVER Friend and Father!

I have lived at Schooner Cove for three years and totally disagree that it's a SCARY place. Unfortuneate things happen everywhere rather it be Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti or Detroit. The property is beautiful and things of this nature are isolated events. @Tru2Blu76, Im not sure of another murder that happend at Schooner Cove recently and obviously you are unsure as well so why post something like that?

I don't understand why Schooner Cove is such a hotbed of criminal activity. It's a nice looking place and McKinley runs it. They usually are able to keep out the riff-raff.

apartmentatings.com has it right, Schooner Cove is a very scary place. Think this was drug related? Tru2Blu76, I think there was a murder not too long ago, the murderer in that case had a bunch of assault/rape/murder cases.
