Washtenaw sheriff's deputies track down thief through GPS chip in cell phone

By Lee Higgins

Washtenaw County sheriff's deputies say they pinpointed the location of a thief Tuesday morning through a GPS chip in a stolen cell phone, a sheriff's department incident summary said.

Investigators say a 34-year-old Milan resident stole a brief case and cell phone from a shopping cart in Walmart in the 2500 block of Ellsworth Road in Ypsilanti Township, the summary said.

Deputies later located the thief at a Days Inn on Carpenter Road in Pittsfield Township through the GPS chip, according to the summary.

The briefcase also was recovered, deputies said. Washtenaw County prosecutors are reviewing the case for possible criminal charges.

There is also the NGA, or is it NGS? I'm just dying to know what was in the briefcase. Can you all FOIA the police inventory on that?

@ Michigan Reader, NSA stands for National Security Agency and was started in 1981 by Executive Order 12333, long before "W". A little paranoid?

@djm12652--NSA stands for the National Security Administration. Started under "W", it was in reponse to 9/11, and has power to track, spy, listen in on phone conversations, violate the Constitution via the Patriot Act.

Hopefully cell phone thiefs don't read this and remove the battery to eliminate detection.

"Washtenaw prosectuors are reviewing the case for possible criminal charges"????? How could the police arrest a suspect if no criminal activity occurred? Did the victim know the alleged perp? Why is this even a question? Oh wait, everything was recovered so no harm, no foul? Or why not just wait until the alleged perp escalates his/her criminal activity to include car-jacking with a weapon....I mean after all, he/she may get away with it this time...and then the police will have to repeat the investigative and arrest actions on this Pile of Scat....

So now they get hotel rooms as a hide out or headqaurters to do crime and have a save place to disappear when the A P B is broadcasted on police radios. they have a legal get away but now that the police knows this tactic you would think that they would pay moreattention to that kind of set ups... Keep doing the best you can Ypsi/A2... One crime @ a time is the best that we can ask 4...
