Dexter High School Top Scholars

Dexter High School will hold its 2013 graduation ceremonies Sunday, June 2, 2 p.m. in the Dexter High School gymnasium. The class includes 270 graduates.

Sarah Bell
Parents: Beth and Scott Bell
Activities and Awards: Sarah was a member of the National Honor Society, and she was a National Merit Scholarship Finalist. She played field hockey for four years and lacrosse for two years. Sarah was editor-in-chief of the literary arts magazine at her school. She received the SEC All-Academic Award. She won a Distinguished Freshman Scholarship at MSU.
Plans After Graduation: Sarah will be attending Michigan State University, majoring in international affairs and Arabic.

James Birmingham
Parents: Pat and Patty Birmingham
Activities and Awards: Jp was a National Honor Society Member. He was a four-year member of the Dexter Marching Band. Jp was a four-year Member of the Wrestling and Football teams and was Captain of both teams his senior year. Jp was a First team All Conference Football player and a Second Team Football Academic All-State. He also, was recognized on the SEC All-Academic Team. In addition, Jp has volunteered often with the youth group at his Church and gone on many Mission Trips.
Plans After Graduation: Jp has received a four-year NROTC Marine Option Scholarship to the University of Michigan where he will be majoring in Engineering with a focus in Civil Engineering.

Hayley Bohn
Parents: Tim and Diane Bohn
Activities and Awards: Hayley was a member of the National Honor Society and a National Merit Finalist. She received the SEC All-Academic award her senior year, as well as the University of Michigan’s Engineering Scholarship of Honor and Regents Merit Scholarship. She participated in the Women in Science club for three years, and she was a member of the second-place DTE Science Bowl team during her senior year. Her previous activities have included Ocean Bowl and Science Olympiad, and she has done volunteer work with the National Relief network during the past five summers.
Plans After graduation: Hayley will be attending the University of Michigan in the fall to study engineering.

Mara Bottomley
Parents: Tim and Mary Bottomley
Activities and Awards: Mara was a member of the National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars. Mara was a member of the varsity softball team for two years, the cross-country team for 4 years, and the track team for two years. She was a captain of both the cross-country and softball teams her senior year.
Plans After Graduation: Mara will be attending Hope College, majoring in molecular biology with a minor in neuroscience.

Megan Cansfield
Parents: Peter and Barbara Cansfield
Activities and Awards: Megan was a member of the National Honor Society and a recipient of the University of Michigan Regents Merit Scholarship. She was a three-year member of the varsity field hockey team, serving as a captain her senior year. She participated in varsity track & field for four years and was a captain for two years. Megan played the clarinet in musical ensembles like the DHS Symphonic Band and marching band. She has also been involved in Link Crew and the Rotary Interact Club. In addition, Megan was chosen to represent Dexter High School at Girls State in 2012. She was selected for the 2013 SEC All-Academic Team and nominated as a WXYZ Brightest and Best event participant.
Plans After Graduation: Megan will be attending the University of Michigan LSA Honors College, majoring in International Studies.

Nicole Fredrich
Parents: Diana and Andreas Fredrich
Activities and Awards: As a member of the National Honor Society, Nicole has received the Officer's Service Award. She was named a Sage Top Scholar in 2012-2013 and was awarded a Full Tuition Merit Scholarship from Adrian College. She is a cellist in the award winning Chamber Orchestra and a member of the nationally acknowledged Dexter Varsity Dance Team for 3 years. She tutors children in the cello and volunteers in a variety of activities around the community year round.
Plans After Graduation: Nicole will be attending Adrian College, majoring in Secondary Education.

Michael Garcia
Parents: Tom and Stacey Garcia
Activities and Awards: Michael served as treasurer for the National Honor Society. He was a co-captain of the varsity water polo team and earned East Region All-Tournament First Team honors. He was a member of the varsity swim and golf teams and a NISCA Academic All American. Michael volunteered with the organization Service Over Self spending one week of the past three summers completing urban home repair in Memphis. He spent his senior spring break on a service trip to Costa Rica sponsored by the Dexter United Methodist Church. Michael attended the University of Michigan’s Salute to Excellence scholar recognition dinner and received the Michigan Regents Merit Scholarship.
Plans After Graduation: Michael will be attending the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business through the Preferred Admission program.

Brett Gary Garwood
Parents: Carla and Duane Garwood
Activities and Awards: Brett was a member of the National Honor Society and was a Link Crew Freshman Mentor in his senior year. He was a four-year member of the baseball team, earning three Varsity letters and was a two-time recipient of the Coach’s Award. Brett was recognized as a scholar athlete all four years and received All-Conference, All-District and All-State Academic Awards. He received numerous individual Academic Excellence Awards in Science, Math, History, English and Spanish between his freshman and junior years. Brett was awarded the University of Michigan’s Department of Atmospheric, Oceanic and Space Sciences Book Award in 2011. He received the Presidential Volunteer Service Award for his involvement in many community service projects. Brett has been awarded Kalamazoo College’s Scholarship for Academic Excellence and Leadership.
Plans After Graduation: Brett will attend Kalamazoo College, where he plans to major in Business/Pre-Law and play for the varsity baseball team.

Shea Holman
Parents: Ann and Jeff Holman
Activities and Awards: As the Vice President of the National Honor Society, Shea has participated in many service projects throughout the community. She was a four-year member of the varsity women’s tennis team and was a captain for three years. Shea was also a member of the Dexter High School Symphonic Band and the Michigan Youth Band as the first chair percussionist in both ensembles. She was a five-time member of the Michigan All State Honors Band and won a first place percussion scholarship from the Michigan Federation of Music Clubs.
Plans After Graduation: Shea will be attending the University of Michigan, majoring in Percussion Performance

Jillianne Hook
Parents: Matt and Leigh Hook
Activities and Awards: Jillianne was a member of the National Honor Society, was a Link Crew Leader, and was selected as a National Merit Finalist. She played Varsity softball and field hockey, was chosen as captain her senior year, and played volleyball for two years. She was involved in various DHS drama club productions, including performing as a lead in the musical her senior year. Jillianne was a member of the DHS marching band, receiving the Best Overall Flag award her senior year. She played the French horn for the Symphonic band and the Chamber Orchestra. She also joined the DHS Jazz Choir her senior year. Jillianne has been very active in her church, playing piano as a soloist in the services, and she has been especially involved in the youth group (serving on the leadership team) and in the Children's ministry (working with the Kid's Choir and VBS). She has gone on mission trips to Memphis, Tennessee and Costa Rica, as well as volunteering locally with Faith in Action, the Share House, and Chelsea Retirement Community. She has also worked for six years as an umpire for the Dexter Little League baseball and softball.
Plans After Graduation: After spending the summer in Memphis, Tennessee working with SOS, a non-profit ministry that helps rebuild and repair homes in impoverished, urban neighborhoods, Jillianne will be attending either Liberty University in their Honors College or Vanderbilt University. She will major in Secondary Education, specializing in Math and English, and minor in French.

Rachel Kuo
Parents: Hsoumei Hu and Shiuhyang Kuo
Activities and Awards: Rachel played the flute in the Symphonic Band and served as a rank leader in the Marching Band. She also had the opportunity to attend the MPulse Summer Flute Institute at the University of Michigan. As a member of the National Honor Society, Rachel contributed to numerous community service projects. In addition, Rachel was a member of the Women in Science club, an editor of the Starboard literary and visual arts magazine, and a Link Crew Freshman Mentor. Rachel often volunteers at the Dexter District Library for monthly book sales and summer programs.
Plans After Graduation: Rachel will attend the University of Michigan to pursue a career in pharmacy.

Erin McCargar
Parents: Jim & Sherry McCargar
Activities and Awards: Erin was one of five to receive the SEC All-Academic Award at Dexter High School. She is a member of Youth Dance Theatre of Michigan and has been a pre-professional member for two years. She plays violin in Dexter High School’s Chamber Orchestra and takes private lessons on the side. She has served in the National Honor Society during her junior and senior years, and she has been involved in several other high school clubs, including Women in Science and Key Club.
Plans After Graduation: Erin will be attending Vassar College, and she will probably be majoring in Environmental Studies.

Alison Rossini
Parents: Anne and Bruce Rossini
Activities and Awards: Alison was a four-year member of both the swim and dive team and the water polo team. She received scholar athlete awards all four years and received all-academic awards from MISCA, NISCA, and MWPA for swimming and water polo. She was a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club her senior year. She often volunteered with the Red Cross and has worked as a lifeguard for Dexter Community Schools.
Plans After Graduation: Alison will be attending the University of Michigan's School of Nursing.

Caroline Rossini
Parents: Anne and Bruce Rossini
Activities and Awards: Caroline was a member of the National Honor Society. She was a four-year member of the girl’s varsity swim and dive team and a two-year member of the girl’s varsity water polo team. Caroline was awarded the MISCA All State Academic Award and was a scholar athlete during her four years of high school. She earned the NISCA Academic All American award her senior year. She has volunteered her time delivering meals through the Ann Arbor Meals on Wheels program.
Plans After Graduation: Caroline will be attending University of Michigan School of Nursing.

Paul Ruble
Parents: Cheryl Ruble and Kevin Hlavaty
Activities and Awards: Paul was a member of the National Honor Society. He was a Scholar Athlete and Academic All American. Paul was a four-year member of the men’s varsity swim and dive team and three-year member of the state team for swimming. In addition to being on the swim team, Paul played soccer his freshman and sophomore year, as well as water polo his senior year. Paul has worked as a lifeguard outside of school.
Plans After Graduation: Paul will be attending the University of Michigan, majoring in either business or engineering.
