Bronson, who has been principal of the school for several years, has picked up other honors in the past. In 2009, she won the Michigan Association of Middle School Educators' Administrator of the Year Award.

The national middle and high school winners of the principal awards will be named in September and recognized in Washington, D.C., during the Principals' Institute for State and National Principals of the Year from Sept. 29 to Oct. 2.

"NASSP strives to identify and showcase the best principals across the nation so we can capture and share their effective practices," NASSP Executive Director Gerald N. Tirozzi said in a statement. "This year's pool of finalists offer a great deal of experience and expertise from which practitioners and policymakers alike can glean valuable insights."

Other finalists are:

  • Ronald Montoya, Valley High School, Las Vegas
  • Wes Taylor, Lowndes High School, Valdosta, Ga.
  • Marjorie Stealey, Norview High School, Norfolk, Va.
  • Catherine Carnahan, Duniway Middle School, McMinnville, Ore.
  • Michael McCarthy, King Middle School, Portland, Maine

Each finalist will receive a $1,500 grant, and the two national award winners - one high school and one middle school principal - will receive additional grants of $3,500. The grants will be used to improve learning at the school.

Congratulations Jami. Mill Creek and Jami Bronson deserve this recognition for the great teaching and learning that takes place in Dexter at the middle school level.

Yes, Bronson certainly is a favorite of the students. After she took over the job from former Superintendent Shirk, she quickly instituted a policy where a student who failed a test was allowed to take the test over and then have the first test grade completely thrown out. Of course there was also the two day special event at Mill Creek where educators from abroad came for a conference during the school week and Mill Creek students lost a day of schooling. Yes, some parents do recognize exactly what she does and now those students in the High School had the second highest graduation rate drop over the last two years (right after Ypsilanti as reported on AnnArbor.com). Bronson (untouchable golden child) will probably continue to get the support of the new interim superintendent, Marshall (6th superintendent change in Dexter over the last 12 years and who also just turned down the Boards offer to be permanent superintendent).
