Dexter middle school student stabbed in ear on school grounds

By David Jesse

A Dexter middle school student was stabbed in the ear by another student this afternoon, officials said.

Dexter Superintendent Rob Glass said the incident occurred around 4 p.m. on the campus of Cornerstone Elementary School, which is at Dan Hoey and Bates Road. Cornerstone houses kindergarden through second grade students.

Details are still be sorting out, Glass said as he was driving to the school.

Early investigation shows two students - one from Mill Creek, which is the district's middle school and houses grades seven and eight, and one from Creekside, which houses fifth and sixth grades - got into an alterication on Cornerstone's grounds.

It appears the middle school student was stabbed with some sort of sharp object. School officials and law enforcement believe it may have been a stylus, which is a thin writing utensil typically used with a Palm Pilot or gaming system.

Derrick Jackson, director of community engagement for the sheriff's department, said it's not yet clear what the students were fighting about or what led to the stabbing. The student accused in the incident is in sixth grade, and the victim is in seventh grade, Jackson said.

Medical and police personnel responded to the scene. The middle school student was getting medical attention for the wound, which caused a lot of bleeding from the ear area, Glass said.

His injuries were not life-threatening, Jackson said.

The sixth grader was taken into custody by police, but it's not yet known whether he will be held in juvenile detention or released to his parents.

“We are treating this very seriously while we investigate what happened,” Glass said.

A horrific story. But, David J., please make sure to use your spellcheck. You misspelled "kindergarten" and "altercation".
