Dexter Township millage would fund building of new substation for fire department

By Cole Bertsos

Residents in Dexter Township will have the opportunity to vote on a millage to build a permanent substation for the Dexter Area Fire Department in the Nov. 6 election, according to a story in the Dexter Leader.

Firefighters with the DAFD have been working out a temporary substation at 12088 N. Territorial Road in Dexter Township since January, reported the Leader.

The 1.00 millage — which equates to $1 for every taxable $1000 — would be levied for seven years and is predicted to raise $287,000 in its first year.

The exact phrasing of the proposal reads:

"Shall Dexter Township impose an increase of up to 1.00 mills ($1.00 per $1,000 of taxable value) in the tax limitation imposed under Article IX, Section 6 of the Michigan Constitution and levy it for seven (7) years, 2012 through 2018 inclusive for the purpose of providing funds for the establishment and construction of a permanent fire substation in the township which 1.00 mill increase will raise an estimated $287,000.00 the first year the millage is levied."

I know everyone wants their own Fire Departments but would it not make much more sense to have County or State wide Fire Departments so the each township does not need two Locations? We are way past the horse and buggy stage

This will get a yes vote from me. The firefighters are operating out or a trailer with the trucks parked in a garage where the sewer authority stores and works on sewage pumps. This can only serve to help our community.

Perhaps they could simply move one of the soon to be empty fire stations from Ann Arbor!

I believe this millage applies to Dexter Township only and the residents of the Village of Dexter will have no vote on the matter.
