Dexter Pharmacy damaged in minor fire

By Ronald Ahrens

(This story has been updated to include a statement released by Dexter Pharmacy.)

The Dexter Pharmacy was damaged by a minor fire this afternoon that brought firefighters from three departments to the scene.

Scio Township Assistant Fire Chief Doug Armstrong said the smoke alarm at the pharmacy in the 8000 block of Main Street triggered at about 11:35 a.m.

Armstrong said firefighters broke the front door of the business to get inside. The rooftop air conditioning unit appeared to overheat, causing a small fire inside the store, Armstrong said.

Firefighters from Dexter, Scio Township and Chelsea quickly extinguished the fire. No one was injured.

A damage estimate is not yet available.

On Sunday afternoon, the pharmacy issued the following statement:

Dexter Pharmacy, located at 8059 Main Street, in Dexter, was damaged in a fire today, Sunday, August 2. We do not know when we will be able to reopen the store, but all customers should go to Dexter Pharmacy 2 at 7039 Dexter Ann Arbor Road to pick up their prescriptions and to have new and refill prescriptions filled. We will have access to patient records, we just cannot operate on Main Street until the Health Department tells us it's okay. Customers can call 734-426-1600 for more information or to get prescriptions filled.

I think that all 3 Departments should get praise for keeping this fire from spreading and a job well done. So may of our surrounding Mutual Aid Department do not get this and shame on the papers for not doing this. The Pharmacy brings back memories of other stores past to so many people and I am commending the Department of Dexter, Scio Township and Chelsea for a job very well done in preserving this building and responding so quickly to the Aid of Dexter. Thank you all very much and a job well done!!
