Dexter Village Council plans public art discussion at work session Monday night

By Lisa Allmendinger

After the initial unveiling of a proposed public art ordinance last month, the Dexter Village Council has planned a work session at 6 p.m. to discuss the details of the proposal before the regular meeting that begins at 7:30 p.m.

Dexter’s Arts, Culture and Heritage Committee drafted an ordinance requiring 1 percent of the cost of village capital improvement projects, such as roadwork or sewer or water infrastructure improvements to be set aside to fund public art. The maximum to be set aside for each project is $10,000.

The group’s mission includes “increasing awareness of Dexter’s heritage and history, serving the local community by providing networking resources and opportunities; acting as a liaison to existing artistic and cultural organizations; and fostering a wide range of cultural activities that enrich our community.”

The proposal includes oversight of village projects by the committee.

“We believe that Dexter should demonstrate its commitment to our growing community by funding public arts,” the summary of the proposal states. Also included are potential places were public art could be placed throughout the village.

The Village Council meets at the Dexter Senior Center, 7720 Dexter-Ann Arbor Road.
