By Michelle Meunier

Volunteers from Washtenaw County were recently recognized for their devotion to Girl Scouting.

Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan (GSHOM) acknowledged nine women from Ann Arbor, four women from Chelsea and Dexter and 10 women from Saline on May 5 at Grace Bible Church.

Notably from Ann Arbor, four leaders were recognized for years of service; Peggy Fisher and Jan Radak both have worked with the Girl Scouts for 25 years and Betty Bishop and Dianne Schwab for 40 years respectively.

Valerie Galler of Ann Arbor received the Honor Pin from Girls Scouts of the USA, while Kerrin Mabrey, Melanie Peck, Cynthia Walton and Glenda Ward were recognized as Outstanding Leaders.

Galler was credited with rebuilding Girl Scouting at Mitchell School and building it up from nothing at Ann Arbor Learning Community. Both of these troops are now successful.

Michelle Hoxie of Dexter also received the Honor Pin while Liza Gray of Chelsea and Diane Singer of Dexter were honored as Outstanding Leaders. Sheila Wortmann from Dexter was honored as an Outstanding Volunteer.

Hoxie is Dexter’s area manager and she brings her experience from Girl Scouting in the military to her job. Hoxie’s work has led to many more girls earning the Silver and Gold Awards due to her organizational skills and hard work.

Two volunteers from Saline received the GSUSA Appreciation Pin: Linda Olsen and Tara Stow. Cynthia Radak and Danielle Sykes were recognized as Outstanding Volunteers. The following six women were named Outstanding Leaders: Dawn Kulczynski, Mary Ellen Huetteman, Maureen Kachman, Lisa Mrozek, Lori Ringle and Barbara Stolzenfeld.

Olsen is an active member of the administrative team for Saline Girl Scouts, and her troop has been called a model of what the Girl Scout Program should be.

Stow is the coordinator of many of Saline’s annual Girl Scouts’ events. She also shares her knowledge of the natural world and international humanitarian projects with the young women.

Through the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, girls discover their strengths, connect with others and work to make the world a better place for everyone. More information can be found on the website at www.gshom.org.
