Dexter residents could be voting on whether the village will become a city as soon as February, now that the state has affirmed signatures on a cityhood petition, Dexter Patch reported.

Voters in Dexter will likely vote next year on whether they want the village to become a city.

The petition now goes to the director of licensing and regulatory affairs. Once he signs off on it, a referendum of those within the proposed boundaries of the city will be scheduled.

If voters approve, the process continues, and a charter commission will be elected to write a city charter. If voters say no, the village will not become a city.

The village has been working toward cityhood for six years.
