By Kyle Feldscher

Dexter Community Schools has canceled classes for Friday following the devastating tornado that swept through the area Thursday afternoon, parents said.

Parents said they received a call from the district Thursday night announcing the cancellation of classes. The district's school buildings were being used as makeshift shelters for area residents who were displaced by the tornado that cut a swath of destruction through Dexter.

Counselors will be available to students from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1-3 p.m. Friday at Wylie Elementary School, 3060 Kensingston St.
