Dexter council expected to set public hearing on medical marijuana dispensaries

By Lisa Allmendinger

Residents will likely get a chance to weigh in next month on proposed zoning changes that would allow medical marijuana dispensaries in Dexter.

At its meeting tonight, the Dexter Village Council will vote to set a Feb. 14 public hearing on the proposed new zoning code.

On Jan. 3, the village’s Planning Commission unanimously approved the proposed changes that will regulate dispensaries. Currently, no dispensaries exist in the village, officials said.

The regulations are designed to mitigate potential impact on surrounding properties and conform with the Michigan Medical Marijuana Act, among other goals.

The village imposed a moratorium on dispensaries, which expires March 21, while the Planning Commission and Village Council put together a zoning ordinance that would comply with the 2008 Medical Marijuana Act.

Here are some of the proposed regulations.

Also on the agenda is a request by Dexter Relay for Life to change its 24-hour American Cancer Society fundraising event from the walking path behind Cornerstone, Mill Creek and Wylie Schools to Monument Park in the center of the village for the May 14-15 event.

The Dexter Village Council meets at the Dexter Senior Center, 7720 Ann Arbor St., at 7:30 p.m.
